Spice Modeling information

What is spice modeling?

SPICE modeling refers to creating mathematical models of electronic components and circuits for simulation using SPICE (Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis) software. These models help engineers predict how circuits will behave before physically building them, saving time and resources during design. SPICE models can represent a wide range of components, from simple resistors to complex integrated circuits, and are essential for accurate electronic design automation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SPICE modeling engineer?

To thrive as a SPICE Modeling Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, semiconductor device physics, and circuit theory, often supported by a relevant degree. Experience with SPICE simulation tools (such as HSPICE or LTspice), scripting languages (like Python or MATLAB), and familiarity with device characterization techniques are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills are vital for collaborating with design teams and interpreting simulation results. These competencies ensure accurate device modeling, efficient design cycles, and successful integration into electronic design workflows.

What are some common challenges faced by SPICE modeling engineers when collaborating with circuit design teams?

SPICE modeling engineers often work closely with circuit design teams to ensure simulation models accurately reflect the behavior of real devices. A common challenge is balancing model complexity with simulation speed, as overly detailed models can slow down circuit simulations, while simplified models may miss important nuances. Effective communication is essential to clarify requirements and expectations, as designers may request specific parameters or behaviors. Regular collaboration and feedback help align modeling efforts with design needs and ensure successful project outcomes.

What is the difference between Spice Modeling vs Circuit Simulation Engineer?

AspectSpice ModelingCircuit Simulation Engineer
Primary FocusDeveloping and refining Spice models for componentsSimulating entire circuits to optimize performance
Required SkillsElectrical engineering, device physics, model developmentCircuit design, simulation tools, system analysis
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, semiconductor companies, EDA firmsDesign firms, semiconductor companies, R&D departments
Common CertificationsNone specific, engineering degrees preferredElectrical engineering degrees, simulation certifications

While Spice Modeling focuses on creating accurate models of electronic components for simulation, Circuit Simulation Engineers use these models to analyze and optimize entire circuits. Both roles require strong electrical engineering backgrounds, but Spice Modeling emphasizes model development, whereas Circuit Simulation Engineers focus on system-level analysis.

Job description

For over four decades, Cirrus Logic has been propelled by the top engineers in mixed-signal processing. Our rockstar team thrives on solving complex challenges with innovative end-user solutions for the world's top consumer brands. Cirrus Logic is also known for its award-winning culture, which was built on a foundation of inclusion and fairness, meaningful community engagement, and delivering enjoyable employee experiences at every turn. But we couldn't do it without our extraordinary workforce - and that's where you come in. Join our team and help us continue to make Cirrus Logic an exceptional place to grow your career!
The Role:
We're looking for a high-caliber engineer with deep expertise in device characterization, test-chip design, SPICE modeling, and device-level reliability. In this role, you'll take ownership of device lab operations, ensuring equipment is optimized and running flawlessly. You'll perform a broad range of silicon device characterization, extract accurate SPICE and aging models, and help shape the foundation of our next-generation semiconductor technologies.
If you thrive at the intersection of hands-on lab work, modeling, and silicon physics, this is your opportunity to make a direct impact on device performance and long-term reliability.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline, or a Master's degree with 3+ years of relevant experience working in semiconductor device modeling and characterization.
  • Strong foundational knowledge of semiconductor device physics, especially as it relates to compact modeling across various device types.
  • Proven hands-on experience performing deep-submicron CMOS and BCD device measurements, including use of parametric analyzers, LCR meters, and other precision instrumentation.
  • Skilled in operating manual, semi-automatic, and fully automatic probers for device-level test and characterization.
  • Familiarity with both active and passive device structures in CMOS and BCD process technologies.
  • Solid understanding of device noise, mismatch behavior, and how these impact circuit-level performance.
  • Knowledge of the physics of device aging and long-term reliability mechanisms.
  • Experience designing test structures (individual devices and arrays) for silicon characterization.
  • Demonstrated expertise in SPICE model generation, validation, and QA flows.
  • Excellent verbal communication and technical writing skills, with the ability to clearly document results, methodologies, and model behavior.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:
  • Ability to stress-test devices to evaluate post-stress behavior and safe-operating-area (SOA) limits.
  • Prior exposure to digital and analog design flows and broader design methodologies.
  • Experience running simulations in Cadence ADE.
  • Knowledge of test-structure layout across multiple technology nodes, including advanced CMOS and BCD/HV for analog and mixed-signal products.
  • Strong coding ability in Python, Perl, or similar scripting languages to support analysis and automation.

Benefits That Put You First
At Cirrus Logic, we're deeply committed to the health, happiness, and long-term well-being of our employees and their families. Our benefits are designed to support your life both inside and outside the office-because when you thrive, we all do.
What We Offer:
  • Inclusive, competitive medical, Rx, dental, and vision coverage to keep you and your family well-supported.
  • FSA & HSA options, letting you use pre-tax dollars for expected-or unexpected-medical expenses.
  • Family-forming benefits, because every path to parenthood deserves support.
  • On-site Medical Clinic, providing convenient care right at work.
  • 13 paid holidays to help you recharge throughout the year.
  • 17 days of PTO, giving you the flexibility to take time when you need it.
  • Immediate 401(k) eligibility with employer matching, helping you invest in your financial future from day one.
  • Free snacks and refreshments stocked in every office to fuel your day.
  • Free shuttle service
