Position Overview
The PRN Nurse provides temporary nursing coverage in school clinics or special education settings to support the health, safety, and well-being of students. This role delivers direct care, manages routine and emergency health needs, and ensures continuity of nursing services when the permanent nurse is absent. The PRN Nurse may work in general education clinics or SPED classrooms serving students with complex medical and developmental needs.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Current Tennessee Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; Associate's Degree in Nursing (ADN) considered with relevant experience
- Minimum 1-2 years of nursing experience, school nursing, pediatrics, emergency, public health, or community health experience preferred.
- Current CPR/AED certification; additional certifications (CSN, NCSN) preferred.
- Knowledge of child health, public health principles, chronic disease management, immunization requirements, and emergency care.
- Ability to perform delegated medical procedures competently and confidently.
- Flexibility to work in varying school environments and with diverse student populations.

- Proficiency in health assessment, triage, and emergency response.

Job Description/ Essential Responsibilities:
Direct Student Care
- Provide nursing assessment, first aid, and management of acute and chronic health conditions.
- Administer daily and emergency medications in accordance with district policies and procedures.
- Monitor students with special health needs and perform required nursing procedures, such as: diabetic management/technologies, catheterizations, G-tube feedings, colostomy management, tracheostomy care/suctioning.
- Respond to medical emergencies and activate EMS when necessary.
Care Coordination & Case Management
- Follow and implement Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) and Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) for students with medical needs.
- Participate in 504, IEP, and student support team meetings as needed.
- Management of student health records, medication administration, immunization documentation, and chronic condition care plans.
- Communicate and collaborate with families, healthcare providers, and school staff to support student safety and access to education.
Health Promotion & Disease Prevention
- Participate with Coordinated School Health to provide districtwide health screenings (vision, hearing, biometrics, etc.).
- Communicate effectively with teachers, administrators, and other staff to ensure continuity of care.
- Promote healthy lifestyles through education and staff training.
School Health Program Management
- Maintain accurate and confidential health records in accordance with FERPA and HIPPA.
- Track and report communicable diseases; enforce exclusion and return-to-school guidelines.
- Maintain inventory of clinic supplies, emergency equipment, and medications.
- Train staff in diabetes support, seizure response, anaphylaxis management, EpiPen use, and emergency procedures.
- Serve as a health resource for school leadership.
Emergency Preparedness & Safety
- Participate in school safety planning, emergency drills, and crisis response teams.
- Provide expertise in managing medical aspects of emergency situations.
Professional Responsibilities
- Follow the NASN Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics for School Nurses.
- Participate in ongoing professional development to maintain clinical competency.
- Uphold district policies and procedures, state nurse practice acts, and professional standards.
*Performs other related duties as assigned by the Superintendent or direct supervisor.
