Job description

Senior Principal Scientist – Spectroscopy (Hybrid). Location: Piscataway, New Jersey. Travel: up to 10% of time.

Responsibilities
  • Design and validate analytical protocols for active and critical inactive ingredients, stabilizers, and sensory molecules using high‑resolution LC/GC MS and NMR technologies.
  • Lead crisis chemistry & forensic analysis, monitoring trace contaminants and root‑cause analysis on stability failures or manufacturing deviations.
  • Conduct competitive product teardowns, use non‑targeted analysis to identify unknown components, and evaluate ingredients from new suppliers.
  • Partner with Marketing and Legal to convert analytical results into visual science for claim validation, ensuring compliance with AOAC, USP, or ISO standards.
  • Drive Lab 4.0 digital transformation: evaluate high‑throughput tools, implement MS imaging platforms, and build automated data pipelines for predictive machine‑learning models.
  • Develop standardized methods for ultra‑trace extractables and leachables screening to study interactions with new sustainable or recycled packaging materials.
Required Qualifications
  • PhD in analytical, organic, or medicinal chemistry.
  • 10 years of advanced laboratory experience.
  • Expert knowledge of high‑resolution LC‑MS and GC‑MS for quantification and structural elucidation.
  • Technical proficiency in FTIR, Raman, and NMR.
  • Experience in a GxP (GLP/GMP) regulated environment with chain‑of‑custody protocols.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in microbiome analytics, including metabolomics of bacterial metabolites.
  • Background in green chemistry analytics, e.g., biodegradability of surfactants or purity of post‑consumer recycled packaging.
  • Ability to translate complex analytical big data into actionable business strategies.
  • Support IP activities and patent filings with detailed molecular characterization.
Compensation and Benefits

Salary: $124,000–$180,000 USD. Salary may include discretionary bonuses, profit‑sharing, and long‑term incentives. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, paid parental leave, disability coverage, 401(k) plan with company match, 15 vacation/PTO days, 13 paid holidays, and paid sick leave.
