About the Job

Working hours for this role is 11pm - 7:30am, Monday - Friday with weekend rotation.

General Summary of Position

Responsible for bringing specimens to the laboratory processing specimens delivered to the lab and maintaining central processing supply levels. Assures that specimens are prepared and properly handled for testing done at reference labs and other laboratories with MedStar Health. Responsible for answering the phone and directly calls to the appropriate technical area.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Rounds on the floor to pick up and receive collected specimens by the phlebotomists at specified intervals.
  • Receives all patient lab specimens delivered by hospital personnel within a timely and efficient manner.
  • Promptly delivers all specimens to the correct technical bench for analysis to take place.
  • Verifies the correct chart by checking name and medical record number on slips and on the chart.
  • Processes and correctly prepares and stores all patient samples that require reference lab tests sent to ARUP.
  • Processes and correctly prepares stores and transfers all patient samples that require shared testing labs sent to other MedStar Health laboratories.
  • Promptly takes results to the proper floors. Delivers and posts results to the wrong floors can result in serious delay in proper care of the patient.
  • Processes specimens received into the lab based on test request.
  • Monitors and maintains central processing inventory levels.
  • Answers phones according to hospital/departmental policy.

Minimal Qualifications
Education

  • High School Diploma or GED, required.

Experience

  • 1-2 years prior specimen processing experience, preferred.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to comprehend and follow the policies and procedures for MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center.
  • Ability to read write and speak or communicate in English to successfully accomplish the essential duties of the position.
  • Ability to demonstrate ethical behavior that supports the hospital's mission values and commitment to compliance with all federal state and regulatory laws. Inspires trust and exhibits honesty and integrity within the scope of daily activities.
  • Exhibits professionalism courtesy and excellent customer service while interacting with patients guests and co-workers.
  • Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Knowledge skill and ability to maintain and chart lab information accurately in patient charts.
  • Ability to physically walk often to obtain lab reports and post results.
  • Knowledge skill and ability to utilize the following equipment: computer telephone scanner fax and copier.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
