Job description

Under general supervision, the incumbent will provide critical support to the current GIS staff by assisting with the development and maintenance of feature layers and by creating mapping and tabular products. This position is responsible for maintaining and updating GIS data to support city operations, producing maps and reports, and responding to internal and external requests for GIS information. In addition, the GIS Technician ensures the accuracy and accessibility of spatial databases and collaborates with staff to integrate GIS applications into city workflows.

As a GIS Technician, you will:
  • Develop and maintain GIS applications, databases, feature layers, and related spatial data for departmental and City wide use.
  • Collect, edit, verify, and integrate GIS data from field surveys, City records, public sources, and other authoritative sources.
  • Interpret engineering plans, survey drawings, Assessor maps, legal descriptions, and other source documents to develop GIS data.
  • Produce maps and graphics, including location maps, site plans, General Plan, land use, annexation, subdivision, and other special-purpose maps.
  • Creates GIS exhibits, atlases, spreadsheets, reports, and other mapping and tabular products for internal and external customers.
  • Update GIS data to reflect development, construction, annexations, infrastructure changes, and other changes within the City.
  • Perform quality control and maintain the accuracy, completeness, consistency, and integrity of spatial and attribute data.
  • Perform spatial analysis, data conversion, georeferencing, and other GIS processing to support City operations and planning.
  • Conduct GPS field data collection, verifies field information, and processes collected data for integration into GIS databases.
  • Respond to GIS and property information requests, providing parcel, address, ownership, dimensions, and legal description information.
  • Provide technical support to GIS users, troubleshoot software and application issues, and assist with related equipment and installations.
  • Assist with GIS application development, testing, documentation, training, procedures, and workflow improvements.
  • Coordinate with City departments and outside agencies on GIS projects, land use activities, emergency mapping, data sharing, and other related assignments.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Will possess knowledge of:
  • City operations, policies, procedures, ordinances, regulations, and applicable federal, state, and local laws related to GIS, land use, planning, property records, mapping, and public information.
  • Current principles, practices, terminology, and trends in Geographic Information Systems use and modern land-based mapping application theory.
  • Techniques applicable to the development of municipal mapping data maintenance and conversion.
Will have the skills to:
  • Use of Microsoft Office Suite โ€“ Office 365 โ€“ (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook, Teams, etc.)
  • ESRI Arc suite of GIS software products, including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and related GIS tools.
  • Computer applications related to the work, including word processing, databases, presentations, graphics, spreadsheets, and inter- and intranet web applications.
  • Edits and creates specialized digital and print maps and geospatial data for department staff.
  • Operating GPS equipment and related field data collection applications to collect, verify, and maintain geospatial data.
Will have the ability to:
  • Work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; identify, analyze, evaluate, diagnose, and solve system problems.
  • Collect, audit, and update data to ensure the integrity and applicability of the information. Maintains records and inventory.
  • Produce spatial products, database queries, and other deliverables using GIS software in response to staff requests.
Education, Training, and Experience:
  • Associateโ€™s Degree Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or related field, AND
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience in GIS, geographic data management, cartography, mapping, surveying, or a closely related field.
Licenses and Certifications:
  • Arizona Driverโ€™s License
Special Requirements:
  • Residency in the United States and within 25 miles of the City of San Luis.
Desired/Preferred:
  • San Luis residency.
  • Bilingual in Spanish.

The employee works in an office environment where the noise level is usually quiet.
