What is spatial data science?

Spatial data science is a field that combines data science techniques with geographic information systems (GIS) to analyze and interpret spatial or location-based data. It involves collecting, processing, and visualizing data that has a geographic or spatial component, such as maps, satellite images, or GPS coordinates. Spatial data scientists use methods from statistics, machine learning, and computer science to solve problems related to urban planning, environmental monitoring, transportation, and more. The insights gained from spatial data science help organizations make better decisions based on the relationships and patterns found in geographic data.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a spatial data scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Spatial Data Scientist, you need a strong background in statistics, geospatial analysis, and programming (often with Python or R), typically supported by a degree in geography, computer science, or a related field. Proficiency with GIS software (such as ArcGIS or QGIS), spatial databases (like PostGIS), and relevant certifications (e.g., Esri Technical Certification) is commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are vital soft skills to interpret spatial data and convey insights to stakeholders. These competencies are crucial for extracting actionable insights from complex geospatial datasets and supporting informed decision-making.

What is the difference between Spatial Data Science vs Geospatial Analyst?

AspectSpatial Data ScienceGeospatial Analyst
Required CredentialsDegree in GIS, Geography, Data Science, or related fields; often includes certifications in GIS or data analysisDegree in Geography, GIS, or related fields; certifications in GIS software are common
Work EnvironmentData analysis, modeling, and programming; often in tech or research settingsMapping, data visualization, and GIS software use; typically in government, environmental, or urban planning agencies
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, research institutions, urban planning, environmental agenciesGovernment agencies, environmental consultancies, urban planning firms

Spatial Data Science focuses on analyzing spatial data using advanced data science techniques, programming, and modeling. In contrast, Geospatial Analysts primarily work with GIS software to create maps and visualize spatial data. While both roles require GIS knowledge, Spatial Data Scientists often have stronger programming and statistical skills, working on complex data analysis projects, whereas Geospatial Analysts focus more on mapping and data visualization tasks.

What are some typical challenges spatial data scientists face when integrating geospatial data from multiple sources?

Spatial data scientists often encounter challenges like inconsistencies in data formats, varying coordinate reference systems, and differences in spatial resolution when integrating geospatial data from multiple sources. Addressing these requires familiarity with data transformation tools and a strong understanding of spatial data standards. Additionally, ensuring data quality and managing large datasets can be complex, so attention to detail and effective use of GIS software are crucial for successful integration.

Job description

Your Role:

The Field Applications Scientist (FAS) is a key member of Miltenyi’s Commercial Sales team, playing a central role in customer success across flow cytometry, imaging, and clinical cell and gene therapy manufacturing platforms. The FAS plays a key role in customer success by bridging pre-sales and post-sales activities across our clinical and research instrument portfolios. Additionally, the FAS contributes to product adoption by understanding their customer’s workflows and recommending Miltenyi solutions when appropriate. The FAS manages a diverse customer base within an assigned territory, collaborating closely with Sales, Technical Support, Product Management, and Service to ensure a seamless and high-quality customer experience. The role requires the ability to work effectively in a matrix organization with multiple teams supporting the same territory, while balancing independent responsibility and proactive problem-solving.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Reasonable accommodations will be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Pre-sales support

  • Collaborate with sales team members (e.g., Technical Sales Representatives, Clinical Applications Managers, Spatial Biology Specialists) to understand customer requirements and design appropriate technical solutions.
  • Perform onsite and virtual product demonstrations for instruments and applications, including seminars, workshops, and “lunch and learn” sessions.
  • Provide technical presentations to support evaluation, selection, and adoption of Miltenyi instruments, reagents, and consumables.
  • Contribute to the sales process by identifying applications that fit customer workflows and recommending appropriate Miltenyi products and configurations.

Post-sales implementation and training

  • Act as the primary field technical support for assigned instrument portfolios, providing onsite installation support and initial end-user training.
  • Conduct retraining and advanced applications training to ensure optimal use of CliniMACS instruments, MACSQuant instruments, Imaging instruments, and related systems in customer workflows.
  • Develop and deliver application-specific training content and workshops tailored to clinical and/or research needs.

Ongoing applications support and troubleshooting

  • Provide timely responses to customer technical inquiries, troubleshooting issues remotely and onsite, in collaboration with Technical Support, Field Service Engineers, and other internal teams.
  • Support resolution of complex technical problems, including coordination of clinical complaints and communication of corrective actions when needed.
  • Distribute and explain software release notes, advising customers on upgrade feasibility, potential impact on workflows, and any required corrective actions.

Customer success and commercial collaboration

  • Build and maintain strong, long-term relationships with customers, acting as a trusted technical advisor and resource for cellular therapy, flow cytometry, imaging, and related applications.
  • Work collaboratively in shared accounts to support the sale of reagents, kits, antibodies, and other consumables through joint workdays and coordinated account planning with local sales specialists.
  • Identify opportunities for upselling and cross-selling additional instruments, software, and consumables based on customer needs, utilization patterns, and emerging applications.
  • Gather and communicate customer feedback on product performance, usability, and emerging requirements to internal stakeholders for continuous improvement.

Territory management and documentation

  • Plan and manage time and territory coverage to ensure appropriate support for new installations, existing customers, and sales opportunities.
  • Work closely with the Technical Support team to provide in-field customer follow-up after a support request or complaint filing as needed.
  • Partner with marketing, product management, and other internal teams to support regional events, workshops, and product launches as needed.
  • Identify potential sales leads across portfolios and facilitate hand-off to the appropriate colleague.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific or technical field (Biology, Immunology, Biomedical Engineering or related discipline) is required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in biological sciences, cellular therapy, flow cytometry, microscopy/spatial biology, or related field.
  • Hands-on experience with one or more of the following domains is required: cellular therapy/cell and gene therapy, flow cytometry, or microscopy/spatial biology.
  • Customer-facing experience in field applications, technical support, or comparable roles is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in clinical or regulated environments is a plus where applicable.

  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong customer relationships and to act as a trusted advisor.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think strategically about customer needs, territory priorities, and business objectives.
  • Proven ability to work independently in the field while collaborating effectively with cross-functional internal teams.

Other Requirements

  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively within the assigned territory (up to 70%, depending on business needs).
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
