Qualifications
Education and Experience: Two years of college coursework (90 quarter hours) including at least nine in GIS or computer science, and one year of experience in GIS mapping or software development.
Substitution of Experience for Education: Experience in mapping, CAD, GIS, or database work may substitute for education up to two years.
Alternative Qualification: Bachelor's degree with relevant coursework or one year of experience as a GIS Technician - Associate with the State of Tennessee.

Overview
Under general supervision, the GIS Technician - Intermediate performs GIS mapping, data collection, and spatial data processing. This role creates digital maps, configures GIS software, and assists with geospatial analysis and GPS data entry while maintaining geospatial databases and producing technical documentation. This class differs from GIS Asc, in that incumbents of the latter perform at the entry level. This class differs from GIS-Adv in that incumbents of the latter either perform at the advanced working level in the central information systems division for the State or supervise subordinate GIS analytic staff.
Responsibilities
1. Uses GIS software to digitize maps, scan site plans, and generate data layers for state databases.
2. Uploads, formats, and maintains spatial data collected through GPS and other sources.
3. Creates maps using appropriate design standards, legends, and cartographic elements.
4. Prepares customized templates and macro scripts to streamline GIS data workflows.
5. Performs spatial analysis and generates reports from GIS data based on project needs.
6. Provides technical support and training on GIS and GPS tools to users and junior staff.
7. Archives maps and reports in digital and paper formats; documents geospatial procedures.
8. Assists in quality control of GIS products and supports database accuracy and update cycles.
