Job description

Overview

We're hiring a Front-End Developer to build the websites that carry our biggest brands.

We're growing, and so is the work. We've got a packed pipeline of major builds, including headless Shopify Plus storefronts, integration-heavy WordPress sites, brochure websites, and everything in between. We need another strong builder to help us ship them at the level our clients expect, and at the pace an agency demands.

You'll turn design into clean, fast, accessible code. Custom WordPress, from-scratch Shopify themes, and the data layers and integrations that do the heavy lifting. You'll work shoulder to shoulder with our UI designers, strategists, and fellow developers, owning your piece of a build from kickoff through QA, launch, and training.

You'll turn our designs into living sites that hundreds of thousands of people use, and that our clients' own teams run every day.

This is a hybrid role based out of our Maine headquarters, with flexibility for remote work. We'd love someone in New England or the wider Northeast so we can get in a room regularly. You'll report to our VP of Development.

About Anchour

Anchour is a creative agency of 40+ people focused on building unforgettable brands and digital experiences that help businesses punch above their weight.

Headquartered in Maine, we partner with SMBs and growing brands across industries like consumer goods, nutrition, fitness, financial services, hospitality, and retail. Our work spans brand strategy, identity design, website design and development, content strategy, and full-service marketing.

We call ourselves Creative Pragmatists. Great work happens when smart people are trusted to do it, and we've built a place where talented people have real ownership, real influence over direction, and the room to do the best work of their careers.

What You'll Do
  • Build sites people run their business on. Take Figma designs and turn them into fast, accessible, mobile-first websites. Custom WordPress themes using ACF and Gutenberg, and custom Shopify storefronts, the kind national brands and financial institutions depend on.
  • Architect what's behind the pages. Centralized data layers, shortcode and component systems, custom post types, and metafield schemas so a client updates a rate or a product once, and it shows up everywhere. Build it once, deploy it across brands and sites.
  • Wire up integrations. Online banking handoffs, mortgage rate syncs, subscriptions through Recharge, CRM and marketing automation, Storefront API, checkout extensibility, and the full analytics and tag stack. The plumbing that turns a site into a working tool.
  • Hold the line on performance, accessibility, and security. Core Web Vitals, WCAG 2.2 AA, and the security posture a bank's IT team will sign off on. You build it in from the first line of code.
  • Own QA, staging, and launch. Cross-browser and cross-device QA, staging review on Pantheon Multidev, user acceptance testing, and a clean, coordinated go-live. Then watch it close in the days after.
  • Make our clients dangerous with their own site. Run the training sessions and write the documentation that turn a CMS into a tool their team uses without us. The build isn't done until they can drive it.
  • Build with AI. We've spent two years building our own AI tools, and we expect you to use them, alongside the best off-the-shelf ones, to move faster and ship sharper. Bring ideas for where AI makes the work better, and build a new solution if there's a gap that needs to be filled.
  • Help our practice grow. We're scaling fast. Bring your take on how we build, what we standardize, and the tools and workflows that keep us quick as the team grows. Good ideas don't wait for permission here.

What We'd Like To See
  • Strong front-end chops. 3+ years building production websites, or a portfolio that makes the years beside the point. Fluent in semantic and accessible HTML, CSS, and modern JavaScript (ES6+). You write clean code the next person can pick up and keep going.
  • WordPress and Shopify depth. Custom WordPress themes with Gutenberg and ACF, plus Shopify theming and Liquid. Bonus for Shopify Plus (checkout extensibility, metafields and metaobjects, subscriptions), headless and the Storefront API. A lot of that is on our board right now.
  • Comfort with the hard parts. Integrations, data architecture, and the compliance and accessibility (WCAG 2.2 AA) that come with financial and healthcare clients. You like problems that matter.
  • A modern workflow. At home in Git, the command line, component-based work, and Tailwind and React. Curious about AI and already using it to build better.
  • An eye that won't quit. Responsive, performant, and pixel-honest. You sweat the UX details. A site that works isn't enough for you.
  • A builder's mindset. Curious, collaborative, low-ego, and driven to ship great work with a tight-knit team. Strong fundamentals, and the itch to keep getting better.
  • Northeast-based, ideally. We're a Maine company and we love getting our people in the same room, so New England or the wider Northeast is a big plus. And we want to hear from a real person, in your own words.

Work Style
  • You ship. Your work shows up live, and it holds up.
  • You communicate early. If a build's drifting, the team hears it from you first.
  • You partner well. Designers, strategists, and devs are all better with you in the mix.
  • You build with AI. You reach for the tools that make you faster, and you help all of us get sharper.
  • You sweat the details. Performance, accessibility, and polish aren't optional.
  • You take the work seriously. Not yourself.
What You'll Get
  • Competitive Salary. We pay well for great work.
  • Flexible Work. Hybrid out of Maine when you're nearby, remote when you're not, with time together in New England when it counts.
  • Retirement. 401k with a 4% company match.
  • Premium Insurance. Premium health, dental, vision, and life insurance with generous coverage for our US-based team members.
  • Optional HSA. An optional health savings account to set aside money on a pre-tax basis for medical expenses.
  • Home Office Setup. A laptop plus 50% reimbursement for home office equipment.
  • Paid & Flexible Holidays. 12 paid holidays throughout the year, including three flexible holidays.
  • Paid Time Off. Minimum three weeks of paid time off per year.
  • Paid Leaves. Paid parental, medical, bereavement, and other types of leave.
  • Flexible & Summer Fridays. Half-day Fridays throughout the summer, and a get-it-done-and-go mindset year-round.
  • Lifelong Learners Fund. Cash for professional development like books, conferences, and courses, plus team bonding fun.
  • Baby Bonding Bucks. A $500 bonus to cover diapers, meals, and other expenses for any employee welcoming a new child.
