Common Search/ComparisonYesYes

Spacex Welders and Aerospace Welders both require certifications like AWS and work in high-precision manufacturing environments. However, Spacex Welders focus on spacecraft components for private space missions, often working in cleanrooms, while Aerospace Welders may work on aircraft or spacecraft for various aerospace companies. Both roles demand specialized skills, but Spacex Welders are specifically aligned with private space industry projects.

What is a SpaceX welder?

SpaceX welders are skilled tradespeople who join metal components using various welding techniques to build and repair spacecraft, rockets, and related systems. They work with advanced materials like stainless steel and aluminum, ensuring structural integrity for high-stress applications. SpaceX welders often need to meet strict quality standards and may work in cleanroom environments or specialized facilities. Their role is critical in the manufacturing and assembly of rockets such as the Falcon 9 and Starship.

What unique challenges do SpaceX welders face compared to welders in other industries?

SpaceX welders often work with specialized materials and tight tolerances required for aerospace applications, which can be more demanding than typical welding jobs. The work may involve advanced techniques like TIG welding on exotic alloys and must meet rigorous quality standards, including non-destructive testing. Welders also collaborate closely with engineers and inspectors to troubleshoot and perfect their work, and are regularly involved in building prototypes or custom components, which adds variety but also complexity to their daily tasks.

How to be a SpaceX welder?

To become a SpaceX welder, candidates typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, along with specialized training or certification in welding such as AWS certification. Experience with aerospace-grade materials and welding techniques, including TIG and MIG welding, is often required. Strong attention to detail, the ability to work in a manufacturing environment, and adherence to safety standards are essential.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a SpaceX welder?

To thrive as a SpaceX Welder, you need advanced welding skills, a solid understanding of metallurgy, and typically a welding certification such as AWS or equivalent. Familiarity with technical drawings, precision measuring tools, and specialized welding equipment like TIG and MIG machines is crucial. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure the structural integrity and safety of aerospace components, which are critical for successful missions.

Job description

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.
SR. WELDING ENGINEER
This position will support manufacturing and development of SpaceX's Falcon 9 and Starship launch vehicles, Dragon spacecraft, and Starlink satellites alongside a strong group of design and build engineers. The person in this position will help develop, qualify, and optimize welding designs and processes including but not limited to; electron beam welding, laser beam welding, gas tungsten arc welding, orbital tube welding, resistance welding, gas metal arc welding, and plasma arc welding. The welding engineer in this role will interface daily with design and manufacturing engineers to make welding judgment calls and improvements and will enforce standardized practices and procedures on multiple welded assemblies.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop, optimize, and qualify weld processes and parameters for multiple welding processes including but not limited to: electron beam welding, laser beam welding, gas tungsten arc welding, orbital tube welding, resistance welding, gas metal arc welding, friction stir welding, and plasma arc welding
  • Support production operations on full scale welded assemblies, providing direction to manufacturing engineers and welders on correct techniques in a fast paced manufacturing environment
