Job Description

AECOM is seeking a qualified Space Planning Project Manager to support our growing Higher Education practice throughout Northern Virginia.  The project manager will provide direct support to our clients focusing on campus space utilization and optimization, coordinating relocations, and managing renovations across multiple buildings and campuses.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate classroom, laboratories, and office spaces; recommend additions, removals, or reconfigurations.
  • Lead relocations from leased facilities to on-campus spaces, coordinating all move activities.
  • Oversee redesign or renovation of spaces to support evolving programmatic needs.
  • Manage move-in processes including furniture, technology, and signage coordination.
  • Manage multiple projects from major renovations to small updates (paint, carpet/abatement, signage, FF&E).
  • Ensure compliance with client design standards, State Council of Higher Education for Virginia requirements, and space utilization goals.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders, end users, consultants, and contractors.
  • Analyze program requirements, space metrics, cost estimates, technology needs, and scheduling impacts.
  • Lead classroom upgrades, relocations/reorganizations, furniture installations, and feasibility studies.
  • Oversee project budgets, schedules, and implementation with internal teams and external partners.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • BA/BS + 4 years of relevant construction experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education
  • Previous experience leading higher education construction projects.
  • Demonstrated experience developing cost estimates and construction schedules.
  • Valid Driver's License and as a condition of employment must be able to pass AECOM's Motor Vehicle Records review.
  • Due to the nature of work, US Citizenship is required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background in interior design, architecture, or space planning (strongly preferred).
  • Experience with CAD and/or Revit.
  • Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills.
  • Experience in facilities planning, building design, or construction administration.
  • Knowledge of FF&E, finishes, and space planning principles.
  • Ability to read/interpret proposals, plans, contracts, and specifications.
  • Strong problem-solving and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • 6 years of progressively responsible experience in space planning project management.
  • Demonstrated recent project and client experience in higher education.
  • Knowledge and experience with local contractors and subcontractors and interior vendors in the Northern Virginia region.
