Southwest Retina information

What is a Southwest Retina specialist?

A Southwest Retina specialist is a medical doctor, typically an ophthalmologist, who focuses on diagnosing and treating diseases of the retina and vitreous in the southwestern region of the United States. These specialists handle conditions such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments, and other retinal disorders. They use advanced imaging and surgical techniques to manage and preserve vision. Patients are often referred to a retina specialist by their general eye doctor for advanced care and treatment.

What are the typical challenges faced by professionals working at a retina specialty clinic like Southwest Retina?

Professionals at retina specialty clinics often encounter challenges such as managing a high volume of patients with complex and sight-threatening conditions. The fast-paced environment requires strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with ophthalmologists, technicians, and administrative staff. Staying current with evolving retinal imaging technology and treatment protocols is essential for delivering optimal patient care. Additionally, handling sensitive patient information and providing support to individuals experiencing vision loss can be emotionally demanding but also highly rewarding.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a retina specialist at Southwest Retina, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Retina Specialist, you need an M.D. or D.O. degree, completion of an ophthalmology residency, and a fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery. Mastery of diagnostic imaging tools (like OCT and fluorescein angiography), laser systems, and surgical instruments is crucial. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and empathy help build patient trust and support collaboration with other healthcare professionals. These skills are essential for delivering accurate diagnoses, effective treatments, and high-quality patient care in a specialized clinical setting.

Job description

Retina Specialist โ€“ Meadows Eye Physicians & Surgeons (Southwest US Expansion, non-PE!) Meadows Eye Physicians and Surgeons โ€“
  • Posted Jul 31, 2026

Meadows Eye Physicians & Surgeons, the largest physician-owned ophthalmology practice in Southern Nevada, is expanding beyond the Las Vegas metro area for the first time โ€” and we're looking for a fellowship-trained retina specialist to help lead the way.

This is a unique opportunity to be our founding physician in a new market across Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, or greater Nevada, with the backing, infrastructure, and referral network of an established, physician-owned group of 19+ doctors. We offer an excellent guaranteed starting salary, equity in the parent company, full benefits (401(k), medical/dental, CME stipend, malpractice coverage), and the autonomy to help shape a new practice location from the ground up.

We use our own proprietary EMR system built specifically for retina and offer the ability to switch to productivity-based pay within 1-1.5 years without an expensive buy-in, and we are vehemently anti-private equity!
