GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

The Domestic Outbound Logistics Manager is responsible for leading outbound logistics strategy and execution for domestic and cross‑border shipments. This role exercises independent judgment and decision‑making authority over transportation strategy, carrier selection, cost optimization, and service performance. The position partners with senior leaders across Operations, Sales, Sourcing, and Finance to align logistics plans with enterprise business objectives and ensure cost‑effective, compliant, and timely delivery of finished goods.


PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES

Strategic & Administrative Authority

  • Develop, implement, and continuously refine outbound transportation strategies to support business objectives, cost controls, and customer service commitments.
  • Exercise independent judgment in evaluating tradeoffs among service levels, transportation costs, capacity constraints, and operational risk.
  • Establish standards, policies, and procedures governing outbound logistics, carrier utilization, tendering methods, and escalation protocols.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives using Lean Six Sigma principles to redesign logistics processes and improve efficiency, cost, and service outcomes.

Financial & Operational Oversight

  • Own outbound logistics cost performance, including analysis of freight spend trends, carrier utilization, and cost-per-unit metrics.
  • Approve carrier selections, routing strategies, and exception cost decisions within defined authority levels.
  • Partner with Finance and Sourcing on carrier negotiations, RFP participation, rate structures, and performance incentives.
  • Define, monitor, and interpret logistics KPIs, recommending corrective actions and strategic changes when targets are not met.

Decision-Making & Risk Management

  • Assess and resolve non‑routine logistics issues, including major service failures, carrier performance risks, customs compliance concerns, and capacity disruptions.
  • Authorize corrective action plans for carrier underperformance and operational breakdowns.
  • Ensure compliance with U.S. and Canadian transportation, customs, and trade regulations, interpreting requirements and determining appropriate business responses.

Cross‑Functional Leadership

  • Serve as the logistics subject matter expert to Sales, Production, Materials, and Customer Service leadership.
  • Influence upstream planning decisions by advising leadership on logistics feasibility, delivery commitments, and cost implications.
  • Lead logistics planning for special projects, including network changes, volume shifts, or new product launches.

People & Resource Leadership (Even Without Direct Reports)

  • Direct and prioritize workflow for internal logistics resources or shared service teams as applicable.
  • Provide functional leadership, coaching, and guidance to planners, coordinators, and operational partners.
  • Determine staffing and capacity needs and make recommendations to leadership.


OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Respond promptly to customer inquiries, ensuring high service levels for both internal and external customers
  • Source freight rates from outside carriers as required to support shipment planning and cost control.
  • Monitor and track carrier performance, focusing on on-time departures and deliveries.
  • Oversee and manage internal carrier capacity to optimize resource utilization.
  • Organize and maintain accurate monthly records for all shipping documentation.
  • Other projects and duties as assigned


QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration

Experience:

  • 5+ years of progressive logistics or supply chain experience
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic decision‑making, cost optimization, and process design
  • Lean Six Sigma certification or applied project leadership strongly preferred
