What does a sound mixer do?

A sound mixer is responsible for recording, balancing, and adjusting audio during film, television, or live event productions. They operate equipment to capture dialogue, ambient sounds, and effects, ensuring audio quality meets production standards. Sound mixers work closely with directors and other crew members to achieve the desired sound atmosphere and clarity. Their work is essential for creating an immersive and professional final product.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sound mixer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sound Mixer, you need a solid understanding of audio engineering principles, acoustics, and experience with recording and mixing, often supported by a relevant degree or formal training. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as Pro Tools, Logic Pro, mixing consoles, and wireless microphone systems is typically required. ABOUT THE ROLE
Cavco Industries is seeking a Digital Media Producer to help create end-to-end video, photography, and editing. Based in our Plano, TX office and reporting to the Senior Media Producer, this role travels nationwide to capture authentic homeowner stories (B2C) and dealer and retail experiences (B2B) - creating engaging content for Cavco's digital channels, social media platforms, website, advertising, and trade shows.
The ideal candidate is a passionate visual storyteller who is equally fluent in long-form brand video, short-form social content, professional photography and editing. Drone and emerging 3D capture technologies preferred but not required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Plan, shoot, and edit video content across multiple formats - brand films, customer testimonials, retail showcases, and short-form social media - ensuring all output aligns with Cavco's brand standards and product line voice.
  • Produce professional photography of new homes, model homes, retail sales centers, lifestyle moments, and team and event coverage to support web, social, advertising, and sales-enablement needs.
  • Capture and produce 3D virtual walkthroughs of model homes and retail experiences using Matterport (or comparable platforms). Will train if needed.
  • Assist in the entire production process, including pre-production planning, on-site shooting, editing, color correction, sound mixing, motion graphics, and final delivery across multiple platforms and formats.
  • Create platform-native short-form content for Instagram Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Facebook, and LinkedIn, optimizing edits, captions, and pacing for each channel.
  • Partner closely with the social media team, content team, and broader marketing organization to ideate, plan, and execute campaigns aligned with company goals and product line strategies.
  • Maintain using Cavco's digital media asset library, ensuring all video, photo, and 3D files are tagged, archived, and easily retrievable by the marketing team.
  • Stay current on emerging trends, platforms, and technologies (including AI-assisted production tools), continuously elevating the quality and impact of Cavco's visual content.
  • Operate as a professional brand ambassador in the field, building rapport and trust with homeowners, retail partners, and team members during shoots.

MINIMUM QUALIFICIATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Film Production, Digital Media, Communications, or a related field preferred but not required with relevant experience.
  • 2-5 years of professional experience in video and photography production, post-production, and digital content creation - ideally in a brand, agency, or real-estate / home-builder marketing environment.
  • Experience working as a member of a creative team with demonstrated social media success.
  • Online portfolio or demo reel required for consideration.
  • Comfortable shooting on a range of equipment from premium, professional cameras to mobile devices.
  • Professional photography skills, including experience shooting interiors, exteriors, and lifestyle / people photography.
  • Experience with sound mixing and editing.
  • Strong creative vision and storytelling skills, with the ability to translate ideas into compelling visual content.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work effectively on a fast-paced, collaborative team.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean motor-vehicle record; ability to travel domestically by air and rental vehicle.
  • Comfort traveling independently to capture content with minimal on-site support.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate (drone), or willingness and ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
  • Experience with Matterport or comparable 3D walkthrough / virtual tour platforms
  • Experience using AI-assisted production tools
  • Experience in the home-building, manufactured housing, real-estate, or home-furnishings industry.
  • Proficiency in motion graphics, animation, and/or 3D modeling.

COMPETENCIES
  • Video editing: Adobe Premiere Pro (primary), with proficiency in After Effects for motion graphics. Familiarity with DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro is a plus.
  • Photo editing: Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom.
  • Audio editing: Adobe Audition or equivalent for sound mixing, voiceover, and post-production audio.
  • Asset management: High organizational skills.
  • Camera systems: Comfortable shooting on a range of equipment from premium professional cameras to mobile devices.
  • AI tools (preferred): Experience with AI-assisted production tools such as Adobe Firefly, Runway, Topaz Video AI, or Descript.

Behavioral Competencies
  • Internally driven for win-win success, with the ability to work independently or in a team environment, create timelines, and prioritize assignments.
  • Confident in new situations, with the ability to build rapport quickly with on- and off-camera individuals - including homeowners, retail partners, and Cavco team members.
  • Strong storytelling instinct and visual narrative judgment.
