What is a Solidworks?

A SolidWorks job typically involves using the SolidWorks CAD (computer-aided design) software to create, modify, and analyze 3D models and engineering drawings. Professionals in this role may work in industries like manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, or product design. Responsibilities can include designing mechanical components, creating technical documentation, and collaborating with engineers and production teams. SolidWorks jobs may range from entry-level drafting positions to advanced engineering roles requiring extensive experience. Proficiency in SolidWorks and a strong understanding of mechanical design principles are often essential for success in this field.

What does a Solidworks do?

Professionals using SolidWorks spend much of their day creating and editing 3D models, generating detailed engineering drawings, and collaborating with team members on design iterations. They often review project requirements, participate in design reviews, and make adjustments based on feedback from engineers or clients. Problem-solving and troubleshooting design issues are common tasks, especially when preparing models for prototyping or manufacturing. Regular communication with cross-functional teams ensures that designs meet functionality, manufacturability, and quality standards.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a Solidworks?

To thrive in a SolidWorks role, you need strong proficiency in 3D CAD modeling, mechanical design principles, and engineering documentation, usually supported by a degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with SolidWorks software, CAD data management tools, and relevant certifications like Certified SolidWorks Associate (CSWA) or Professional (CSWP) are highly valued. Strong problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help set candidates apart. These skills enable efficient product development, clear technical documentation, and successful collaboration on engineering projects.

Is SolidWorks a good career?

SolidWorks is a widely used CAD software for mechanical design, and careers involving SolidWorks typically include roles such as mechanical engineer, design engineer, or CAD technician. Job description

About the Role
The Production Support Technician is a technical support role designed to bridge the gap between Industrial Engineering (IE) and the production floor. This position functions as a technical collaborator, responsible for taking 3D CAD files, verifying they run as intended on the fabrication equipment, and performing routine routing updates to relieve the IE team of repetitive work. Additionally, this role takes ownership of the shop packet release process to ensure that production lines receive accurate job orders and drawings to maintain peak operational flow.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Support & Machine Verification
  • File Transfers: Take engineering specifications and CAD models and utilize manufacturing software to prepare and load instructions for fabrication equipment (automated punches, lasers, and press brakes).
  • Machine Communication: Ensure files are correctly transferred to machine controllers and verify that they execute as intended on the floor.
  • Routing Updates: Support the IE team by performing routine data entry and clerical routing updates in the ERP system to keep manufacturing processes accurate.
  • Production Readiness: Support the IE team by performing initial "test runs" on the floor to confirm files meet design tolerances.
  • Technical Troubleshooting: Assist operators in basic troubleshooting of file-related issues at the machine, providing feedback to IEs if design adjustments are needed.
  • Production Standards Support: Assist the IE team with basic data collection, such as time studies using stopwatches, to help audit labor standards and process bottlenecks.
Shop Packet & Order Administration
  • Packet Ownership: Act as the central owner for the "oven order" job packet process. Use the ERP system (Infor CSI) to view and release orders based on customer demand, typically looking ahead for two to three weeks.
  • Order Release & Distribution: Print and physically distribute comprehensive shop packets-including work orders, technical drawings, and Bills of Materials (BOM)-to production leads.
  • Priority Management: Respond to "one-off" requests and last-minute priority shifts from the Director of Operations, researching and releasing urgent orders to adjust the floor workflow as needed.
  • System Integrity: Ensure that engineering change notices (ECNs) are reflected in active shop packets before they hit the floor.
  • Operational Liaison: Serve as a link between the office and the shop floor, ensuring that technical drawings match the physical work being performed.
Qualifications and Essential Functions
  • SolidWorks Proficiency: A fundamental background in SolidWorks is required to view models and interpret dimensions.
  • Technical Aptitude: Ability to learn basic manufacturing software and machine-control interfaces.
  • Operational Literacy: Ability to read blueprints, wiring schematics, and technical documentation.
  • System Proficiency: Competence in ERP business systems (Infor CSI) and Microsoft Excel.
  • Detail Oriented: Close attention to detail in managing job packets as small errors can lead to production delays and inventory discrepancies.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. occasionally to move/inspect parts or verify materials.

Requirements
Requirements & Eligibility
  • Experience: 2-4 years in a manufacturing environment (Fabrication or Assembly).
  • Skills: Experience with CAD software (SolidWorks) is a must. Prior experience with machine operation or work order flow is a plus.

Position Details
  • Department: Industrial Engineering
  • Pay Range: $26.00 - $28.00 per hour
