Solidworks Job information

What is the difference between Solidworks Job vs Mechanical Drafter?

AspectSolidworks JobMechanical Drafter
Required CredentialsProficiency in Solidworks, often an engineering or technical degreeDrafting certification or technical diploma, familiarity with CAD software
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, engineering firms, manufacturing companiesEngineering departments, manufacturing plants, design studios
Employer & Industry UsageUsed across engineering, manufacturing, product designPrimarily in manufacturing, engineering, and construction sectors
Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding roles involving Solidworks designComparing drafting roles with Solidworks skills

Solidworks Jobs focus on designing and modeling products using Solidworks software, often requiring engineering knowledge. Mechanical Drafters create technical drawings, sometimes using Solidworks, but may also work with other CAD tools. Both roles are essential in product development and manufacturing, with Solidworks Jobs typically demanding more advanced CAD proficiency and engineering background.

What is a Solidworks job?

SolidWorks jobs are positions that involve the use of SolidWorks, a popular 3D computer-aided design (CAD) software, to create, modify, and analyze models and drawings for engineering and manufacturing projects. Professionals in these roles may work as designers, engineers, drafters, or technicians in industries such as automotive, aerospace, product design, and manufacturing. Responsibilities often include developing detailed 3D models, producing technical drawings, collaborating with other teams, and ensuring designs meet specifications and standards.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in Solidworks roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals working in Solidworks often encounter challenges such as managing large assemblies, ensuring compatibility between different file formats, and optimizing designs for manufacturability. Staying organized with file management and regularly updating software can alleviate performance issues. Collaborating closely with engineering and manufacturing teams helps resolve design constraints early, and ongoing training in advanced Solidworks features can further enhance efficiency and accuracy.

Ideal candidates are strong communicators, thrive in team environments, and bring fresh thinking to design challenges. If you’re ready to make an impact and group with a forward-thinking team, we’d love to hear from you!

Your future tasks:

  • Create detailed drawings, including dimensioning and tolerancing using GD&T standards.
  • Manage part libraries.
  • Work directly with other departments (production, logistics, etc.) as needed.
  • Participate in build activities.
  • Design test racks, rack mount enclosures, bulkhead panels, etc.
  • Design fixtures (e.g. PCBA bed of nails).
  • Lead internal and external design reviews and production readiness reviews.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously at various stages.
Requirements:
  • Proficient in SolidWorks, with the ability to create conceptual and fully detailed designs.
  • Knowledge of advanced SolidWorks tools such as surfacing, sheet metal, and weldments.
  • Experience with creating detailed drawings, including dimensioning and tolerancing using GD&T standards.
  • Knowledge of SolidWorks PDM (Product Data Management) or equivalent data management tools.
  • Communication and time management skills.
  • Innovative design skills (thinking outside the box).
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Reuse and production mindset.
  • Willing to be hands-on.

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree of an engineering discipline (Mechanical, Electrical, etc.).
  • Familiar with a test/verification environment.
  • Cross departmental experience (e.g. spent time in a machine shop).
  • Experience with JIRA or equivalent project management tools
  • Experience working in an AGILE environment.
  • Mechanical, Electrical, Pneumatics design and build experience.

The successful candidate for this position will have excellent communication skills, be a team player, and be able to manage their time effectively. They will also have a passion for innovation and design, with the ability to think outside the box. If you meet these requirements and are looking for an exciting new challenge, we encourage you to apply for this position.
