What is a Solids Control job?

A Solids Control job involves managing drilling fluids and removing unwanted solids during the drilling process in oil and gas operations. Solids control technicians operate equipment such as shale shakers, centrifuges, and desanders to maintain proper mud properties, ensuring efficient drilling and reducing environmental impact. Their responsibilities include monitoring fluid consistency, performing maintenance on machinery, and adhering to safety standards. This role is critical for optimizing drilling performance and minimizing costs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Solids Control position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solids Control professional, you need a strong understanding of drilling operations, mechanical aptitude, and knowledge of equipment used in separating solids from drilling fluids. Familiarity with centrifuges, shale shakers, desanders, and regulatory compliance, as well as certifications such as HAZWOPER or OSHA safety training, are often required. Strong attention to detail, teamwork, and effective troubleshooting abilities help you excel on site. These skills and qualifications are vital to maintaining operational efficiency, complying with safety standards, and minimizing environmental impact in drilling projects.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a Solids Control professional in the field?

A Solids Control professional usually spends their workdays operating and monitoring equipment such as shale shakers, centrifuges, and mud cleaners to ensure optimal removal of solids from drilling fluids. They routinely inspect, maintain, and troubleshoot machinery to prevent downtime, as well as document and report performance data and any anomalies to supervisors. The role often requires collaboration with drilling and mud engineers to adapt to changing drilling conditions, ensuring environmental compliance and efficient fluid recycling. This hands-on job typically involves a rotation-based schedule and outdoor work at drilling sites.

Job description

Manufacturing Process Engineer II - Solids

Tosoh Quartz Inc. manufactures ultrahighpurity quartz components used in the world’s most advanced semiconductor tools. Our Solids Manufacturing Engineering team works handson with operators, quality, and maintenance to create reliable, repeatable machining and grinding processes for precision quartz parts.

We are seeking an experienced, shopfloorfocused Manufacturing Process Engineer who thrives in a highmix, lowvolume environment and enjoys solving complex challenges. This highly collaborative role does not have CNC programming responsibilities, rather you will work directly with CNC Operators, Quality, Maintenance and your fellow Engineers to build robust, repeatable processes.

What You’ll Do

  • Improve and sustain machining and grinding processes for precision quartz components.
  • Optimize fixtures, tooling, parameters, and setups to enhance yield, throughput, and repeatability.
  • Lead rootcause analysis (RCA/8D) and partner with Quality/Metrology to meet tight GD&T and surface integrity requirements.
  • Create clear, visual standard work, setup sheets, and SOPs used across shifts.
  • Collaborate daily with CNC Operators, Quality, Maintenance, and fellow Engineers to resolve issues and strengthen processes.
  • Support equipment upgrades, PM recommendations, and EHS/ergonomic improvements.
  • Provide onfloor coaching, model strong teamwork, and contribute to a culture of continuous learning.

What You’ll Bring

  • BS in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or related engineering field.
  • 4+ years of handson experience with machining or precision manufacturing processes.
  • Strong understanding of fixtures, workholding, grinding principles, and setup optimization.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings and apply GD&T.
  • Experience leading RCA/8D, improving yield, and using SPC/statistics for process control.
  • Effective, respectful communication with operators, supervisors, and technical teams.
  • Proficiency with ERP/MES systems and Microsoft 365.

Preferred Experience

  • Machining or grinding of quartz, glass, ceramics, or other brittle materials.
  • Hightolerance metrology: CMM, optical, surface/form inspection.
  • Creating visual work instructions in a QMS/PLM or MES environment.
  • SolidWorks or similar CAD proficiency.

Benefits of working at Tosoh Quartz.

Located in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, Tosoh Quartz offers comprehensive health and wellness benefits (with $750 annual wellness reimbursement), 401(k), generous PTO accrual, 100 hours of Holiday pay, tuition reimbursement, dependent education assistance, Employee Assistance Plan (EAP), free parking, Columbia Sportwear employee store access, and more.
