What is a solid state NMR PhD?

A Solid State NMR PhD refers to a doctoral program or researcher specializing in the use of solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. This advanced technique is used to study the atomic-level structure and dynamics of solid materials, such as crystals, polymers, or biomolecules. Students or professionals in this field typically conduct research to develop new NMR methods or to investigate material properties using NMR. The work often combines chemistry, physics, and materials science, and is valuable in both academic and industrial settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a solid state NMR PhD, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solid State NMR PhD, you need advanced knowledge in physical chemistry or materials science, experience with solid-state NMR spectroscopy techniques, and a relevant doctoral degree. Familiarity with NMR instrumentation, data analysis software (such as TopSpin or Bruker), and pulse sequence programming is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective scientific communication distinguish top performers in this field. These skills are essential for designing experiments, interpreting complex data, and advancing research in materials characterization.

What are some common challenges faced by solid state NMR PhDs when working on interdisciplinary research teams?

Solid State NMR PhDs often collaborate with chemists, materials scientists, and engineers, which can present challenges in aligning objectives and communicating complex data across disciplines. Navigating differences in technical vocabulary and experimental approaches requires strong communication and adaptability. Building mutual understanding and integrating diverse expertise are key to advancing projects efficiently. Developing these collaboration skills can enhance your impact and open up broader career opportunities within academia or industry.

What is the difference between Solid State Nmr Phd vs Analytical Chemist?

AspectSolid State Nmr PhdAnalytical Chemist
Required CredentialsPhD in Chemistry or related field, specialized training in NMR techniquesBachelor's or Master's in Chemistry, with certification or experience in analytical methods
Work EnvironmentResearch laboratories, academic institutions, industry R&DLaboratories, manufacturing plants, quality control labs
Industry UsageMaterials science, pharmaceuticals, polymers, academiaPharmaceuticals, environmental testing, food safety, manufacturing

Solid State Nmr Phd professionals focus on advanced NMR spectroscopy techniques for material analysis, often in research settings. Analytical Chemists perform routine testing and analysis across various industries. While both roles require chemistry knowledge, Solid State Nmr Phd roles demand specialized training in NMR, whereas Analytical Chemists emphasize broad analytical skills. The choice depends on your expertise and career interests in research versus applied testing.

Job description

Position Summary

As a Sr. Cell Engineer, you will be focused on developing new solid state electrode materials with a specific focus on Blue Current's composite cathode technology. Through careful design of experiments, you will be testing and integrating novel cathode active materials and solid electrolytes into a solid-state battery cathode. Hands-on experience in electrochemistry of lithium-ion battery, electrode formulations and processing is required. A background in materials science, chemical engineering, chemistry, physics, or a related field is preferred. This position will offer hands-on, fast-paced work in a growing team that has a shared passion to change the energy storage landscape.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Develop and test composite solid state cathode materials and formulations that improve cell performance and safety.
  • Prepare and characterize solid state cathode composites and slurries (for example, rheology, stability, conductivity, dispersion, etc.) using state-of-the-art tools.
  • Optimize and engineer composite solid-state cathodes based on a strong understanding of how that cathode interacts with the solid electrolyte.
  • Assemble solid state cells and perform electrochemical testing to analyze the impact of cathode active materials and electrode composition on cell performance.
  • Characterize cell materials using various analytical (e.g. SEM, XRD, TGA, etc.) and electrochemical (e.g. EIS and CV) techniques.
  • Document and analyze electrochemical tests and analytical characterization results to measure the impact of cathode material properties on cell performance.
  • Clearly communicate complex results to cross-functional teams and senior leadership.
  • Work with cross-functional teams ensuring high-quality, on-schedule execution of projects.
  • Continuously survey and interpret literature on solid-state battery materials and architectures, integrating key insights into the company's technical strategies.
  • Contribute to the company's IP portfolio by exploring novel materials, cell designs, and processing approaches that advance solid-state cell performance.
  • Support a strong safety culture by following and improving laboratory safety practices, demonstrating exemplary experimental techniques, and helping implement best-practice updates.
