What is a solar job?

Solar jobs are roles involved in the design, installation, maintenance, and management of solar energy systems, including solar panels and related infrastructure. These jobs can range from solar panel installers and electricians to engineers, project managers, sales representatives, and researchers. Solar jobs play a crucial role in the transition to renewable energy by helping homes, businesses, and communities adopt clean, sustainable power sources.

What are some common challenges faced in a solar installer role, and how can they be managed?

Solar installers often encounter challenges such as working in varying weather conditions, navigating complex rooftops, and managing tight project schedules. To manage these, installers typically receive safety training, use specialized equipment, and work closely with project managers to ensure timelines are met. Team communication and adaptability are key, as installers often collaborate with electricians and engineers to address on-site issues efficiently. Emphasizing safety and staying up-to-date with industry best practices can help overcome these challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a solar technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solar Technician, you need a solid understanding of electrical systems, solar panel installation, and safety protocols, often supported by technical training or relevant certifications. Familiarity with photovoltaic (PV) system design software, electrical testing equipment, and industry-standard safety gear is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help technicians excel in troubleshooting and collaborating with clients or team members. These skills ensure safe, efficient installation and maintenance of solar systems, contributing to reliable renewable energy solutions.

Job description

About Kin Home

Kin Home is a fast growing solar and home services company helping customers improve their homes with solar, roofing, HVAC, and other efficiency upgrades, all under one roof. Our projects move fast, our crews operate in multiple markets, and our accounting team keeps the numbers tight and the company running efficiently.

Weโ€™re looking for a Controller who understands how to manage the accounting side of a construction style business. This candidate must understand how to handle WIP schedules, lender funding, commissions, and accurate revenue recognition. Youโ€™ll work closely with our Finance Director and CFO to strengthen processes, controls, and build scalable financial systems as we continue to grow across new markets and service lines. We believe in promoting from within and want this position to grow into the full-time controller position.

What Youโ€™ll Do:

  • Manage the month-end close process: prepare journal entries, reconcile accounts, track job costs, and produce accurate monthly financials.
  • Maintain WIP and job cost schedules across solar, roofing, HVAC, and other service lines to ensure real-time project visibility and profitability.
  • Reconcile lender funding, ensuring cash receipts and loan proceeds align with project data.
  • Work with operations teams to align install milestones, costs, and revenue recognition across systems.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis to help leadership understand trends and performance by division.
  • Strengthen internal controls, policies, and accounting workflows as the company scales.
  • Provide cash flow and profitability analysis by market, product line, and customer segment.

What Youโ€™ll Bring

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA or CMA preferred).
  • 2+ years of accounting experience, construction, solar, HVAC, roofing, or other project-based industries strongly preferred.
  • Experience with QuickBooks Online, Excel, and job costing or ERP systems
  • Solid understanding of WIP, job costing, and construction accounting.
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical mindset, and ability to thrive in a high volume, fast paced environment.
  • A collaborative, process minded approach; someone who wants to help build better systems, not just maintain the old ones.

Why Youโ€™ll Love Working Here:

At Kin Home, youโ€™ll join a team thatโ€™s redefining what a modern home services company looks like. Youโ€™ll get exposure to multiple trades, gain hands on experience with complex project accounting, and have the opportunity to shape the financial backbone of a growing, values driven company.
