What does a solar project manager do?

A solar project manager oversees the installation of solar projects, from small residential and commercial roofing projects to large-scale solar power plants. Your duties and responsibilities in this career can vary slightly depending on the scale of your project plan, but many of the principles are overlapping. You need to know how to develop budgets, manage proposals and bids from contractors, negotiate prices, pull building permits, coordinate the construction schedule, and be familiar with tax incentives and rebates for which your clients may qualify.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a solar project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solar Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, knowledge of renewable energy systems, and typically a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with project management software (such as MS Project or Primavera), CAD tools, and relevant certifications like PMP or NABCEP is often required. Outstanding communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities help manage teams, stakeholders, and complex project timelines. These skills ensure solar projects are completed efficiently, safely, and within budget, maximizing both sustainability and client satisfaction.

Founded in 1973, DJ&A is a multidisciplinary professional services consulting firm with office locations in Montana, Colorado, Washington, Florida, New Mexico, and Nevada. Our team of over 180 professionals works across the country to deliver a range of services, including engineering, environmental, survey, mapping, landscape architecture, and planning, for federal, state, local, tribal, and private clients.

This position plays a key role in leading and delivering local and regional site development projects while serving as a trusted advisor to long-standing and emerging clients. The ideal candidate enjoys owning projects, values quality and attention to detail, and thrives in a collaborative, relationship-driven environment where integrity, accountability, and people matter.

Client Engagement & Business Development
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to regional clients, providing responsive service and thoughtful solutions.
  • Maintain and grow relationships with prioritized local clients while contributing as a client engagement manager for additional accounts.
  • Build trust through responsive service, follow-through, and transparent communication, serving as a long-term partner rather than a transactional consultant.
  • Support business development efforts through proposal development, interviews, and client meetings.
  • Identify opportunities to expand services and strengthen long-term client partnerships.
Leadership & Mentorship
  • Mentor and support emerging engineers and project managers.
  • Foster a collaborative, respectful, and quality-focused team environment.
  • Contribute to a respectful, inclusive team culture where people feel supported, challenged, and valued.
Preferred Project Experience:
  • Site development for public and private clients
  • Grading, drainage, and utility design
  • Municipal coordination and permitting
  • Developed positive relationships with area developers, contractors, and regulatory agencies (City of Bozeman Engr./Public Works, Bozeman Community Development Dept, Gallatin County, etc.)

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program, or related engineering degree (required).
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) (required).
  • 10+ years of progressive civil engineering experience, including project management responsibilities.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality, attention to detail, and client service.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to sit, stand, and use computer equipment for extended periods.
  • Occasional travel to project sites, including outdoor environments and construction areas.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. occasionally.
Salary and Benefits
  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience.
  • Comprehensive benefits package including:
  • Medical insurance
  • 401(k) with employer contribution
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • Professional development support, including licensure and training
  • Flexible work schedule
Office Location
  • Bozeman, MT
Who Will Thrive in This Role

You may thrive in this role if you:

  • Enjoy project management and take pride in leading projects from start to finish.
  • Care deeply about quality, accuracy, and delivering work you stand behind.
  • Value relationships and enjoy being a trusted advisor to clients and collaborators.
  • Are organized, proactive, and comfortable balancing technical work with communication and leadership.
  • Enjoy mentoring and supporting emerging professionals.
