What is solar panel construction?

Solar panel construction refers to the process of assembling and installing photovoltaic (PV) solar panels, which convert sunlight into electricity. This job involves preparing the installation site, mounting panels on rooftops or the ground, wiring electrical connections, and ensuring the system meets safety and performance standards. Workers may also test the system and perform maintenance. Solar panel construction is a critical part of the renewable energy industry, helping to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. It often requires knowledge of electrical systems, construction safety, and local building codes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in solar panel construction?

To thrive in Solar Panel Construction, you need knowledge of electrical systems, basic construction skills, and often a high school diploma or relevant technical certification. Familiarity with tools like power drills, multimeters, and solar panel mounting systems, as well as OSHA safety certification, is typically required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities are essential soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure safe, efficient installation of solar panels and contribute to successful, high-quality renewable energy projects.

What are some common challenges faced during solar panel construction projects, and how are they typically addressed?

Solar panel construction projects often encounter challenges such as unpredictable weather conditions, coordinating schedules among multiple contractors, and ensuring site safety. Weather delays can slow down installation, so project managers usually build flexibility into timelines. Effective communication and regular meetings help keep all team members aligned, while strict adherence to safety protocols minimizes on-site risks. Being adaptable and proactive in problem-solving is key for anyone considering a role in solar panel construction.

Job description

Assistant Regional Operations Manager - Solar

Houston, TX    Full-Time    Salaried, Exempt    On-Site

A solar install isn't done when the panels go up. It's done when the inspection clears, the power's reconnected, and the paperwork's closed out. That's your territory.

Freedom Power was born when Freedom Solar and Freedom HVAC joined forces to become Texas's complete whole-house energy company. We don't just install equipment. We hand homeowners the keys to something bigger: control over their energy, their bills, and their future. We call it Energy Empowerment, and it's not a tagline - it's the reason we show up every day.

As Assistant Regional Operations Manager, you'll own the coordination, compliance, and communications layer that gets our Houston-region solar projects inspected, reconnected, and closed. Where the ROM owns the front half of a project - scheduling, homeowner authorization, getting a job install-ready - you own the back half: compliance, inspections, utility and AHJ coordination, reconnection, and keeping everyone talking to each other. You'll report directly to the ROM and step in as their backup when it counts.

Your Day-to-Day

  • Own inspection scheduling - shutdown, utility, city/AHJ, and meter-release inspections.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact with utility companies and jurisdictions for shutdowns, inspections, and reconnection.
  • Schedule subcontractor crews and coordinate their dates against the overall install schedule.
  • Make sure every crew Job Packet is accurate before it hits the field.
  • Manage local installer payroll audits and payroll app acceptance and accuracy.
  • Process installation reporting, and upload photos and documents into customer files.
  • Manage the solar installation workflow for the Houston region.
  • Initiate inspection processes and work directly with the Inspections Coordinator.
  • Manage customer accounts in Project Sunrise from installation through project completion.
  • Own regional communications - keeping the ROM, crews, and subcontractors aligned on schedules, status, and blockers.
  • Partner closely with the ROM and HR on employee relations issues.
  • Back up the ROM as needed, stepping into front-half responsibilities when required.

What You Bring

  • Previous project administration or field construction experience
  • Prior team lead or supervisory experience strongly preferred
  • Prior solar energy experience strongly preferred
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills - you thrive on staying ahead of a fast-paced schedule
  • Strong computer skills, including MS Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Ability to juggle multiple priorities without dropping the details
  • Valid driver's license and the ability to meet motor vehicle requirements

The Physical Side

  • Comfortable with light lifting and carrying (under 15 lbs), walking, standing, and sitting throughout the day
  • Able to operate office equipment and a motor vehicle, with travel by car up to 10% of the time
  • Comfortable working closely with others as well as independently

What's In It For You

  • Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance
  • 100% Company-Sponsored Short-Term Disability
  • 401(k) Employer Matching
  • Weekly Pay Dates
  • 3 Weeks PTO + 3 Sick Days
  • 12 Paid Holidays + 1 Floating Holiday
  • Real upward mobility - a clear path toward Regional Operations Manager and beyond
