What does a solar panel cleaner do?

A solar panel cleaner is responsible for maintaining the efficiency of solar panels by removing dirt, dust, bird droppings, and other debris from their surfaces. Regular cleaning ensures that the panels receive maximum sunlight, which helps them generate more electricity. This job often involves using specialized equipment and cleaning solutions to avoid damaging the panels. Solar panel cleaners may work for solar installation companies, cleaning services, or as independent contractors. Their work helps extend the lifespan of solar panels and improve overall system performance.

What are some common challenges faced by solar panel cleaners in the field?

Solar panel cleaners often work outdoors and must navigate various weather conditions, such as extreme heat or rain, which can affect both safety and efficiency. Accessing rooftop panels can sometimes require additional safety equipment and careful planning to prevent accidents. Additionally, cleaners must be mindful to use the correct cleaning methods and products to avoid damaging sensitive panel surfaces while ensuring optimal energy output. Coordination with facility managers or homeowners is also essential to schedule cleanings at appropriate times without disrupting regular activities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a solar panel cleaner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solar Panel Cleaner, you need a solid understanding of cleaning techniques, basic knowledge of photovoltaic systems, and physical fitness, often supported by on-the-job training or relevant safety certifications. Familiarity with cleaning equipment, water-fed poles, safety harnesses, and occasionally lift systems is important for efficiency and safety. Attention to detail, reliability, and strong communication skills help ensure thorough work and positive client relationships. These skills are crucial for maintaining optimal panel performance, ensuring safety, and delivering quality service to clients.

The Technician role typically requires certifications and broader technical skills, while Cleaners usually need safety training. Both jobs are essential in the solar industry but serve different functions.

Is solar panel cleaning a good business to start?

Job description

Job Description

Rossmönster is a leading custom adventure van and truck camper manufacturer dedicated to crafting unique and high-quality mobile living solutions. With a passion for exploration and a commitment to excellence, we design and build custom vehicles that empower individuals to embark on unforgettable adventures.

Position Overview: We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Electrical Technician to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for the installation, wiring, and commissioning of low-voltage DC and shore power AC electrical systems in custom van and truck camper conversions. Your precision and systems thinking will play a vital role in ensuring every build's electrical system is safe, reliable, and meets the highest standards. As a key member of our production team, you will collaborate closely with cabinet, plumbing, and final assembly technicians to deliver fully integrated, functional, and adventure-ready interiors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Install, wire, and commission complete 12V/24V DC and 120V AC shore power electrical systems, including lithium (LiFePO4) battery banks, inverter/chargers, DC-DC chargers, solar arrays, and charge controllers.
  • Route, secure, and terminate wiring harnesses throughout vehicle chassis and cabinetry, ensuring proper strain relief, chafe protection, and adherence to ABYC/RVIA best practices.
  • Install and wire 12V appliances and accessories including LED lighting, roof fans, refrigerators, water pumps, diesel heaters (Webasto/Espar), induction cooktops, and entertainment systems.
  • Mount and terminate distribution components including fuse panels, busbars, breakers, battery disconnects, and shore power inlets.
  • Install and configure system monitoring and control hardware such as Victron components (Cerbo GX, MultiPlus, SmartSolar, BMV), switch panels, and touchscreen controls.
  • Install roof-mounted solar panels, cable glands, and roof penetrations with proper sealing.
  • Install connectivity hardware including cellular boosters, WiFi routers, and Starlink systems.
  • Test, troubleshoot, and commission all electrical subsystems using multimeters, clamp meters, and diagnostic tools; document system settings and provide clean handoff to QC and service.
  • Interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, and build specifications to execute installs accurately and flag design issues early.
  • Label circuits and wire runs clearly and maintain as-built documentation for every build.
  • Operate hand and power tools safely and accurately, including crimpers, heat guns, drills, rotary tools, and cutting equipment.
  • Follow all workplace safety guidelines, including PPE requirements, battery handling procedures, and lockout/tagout for energized systems.
  • Work closely with cabinet, plumbing, upholstery, and final assembly teams to coordinate penetrations, routing, and install sequencing to meet production deadlines and quality standards.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical training in electrical, automotive, marine, or RV systems preferred.
  • At least 1 year of experience in low-voltage DC electrical work — RV, marine, solar, automotive, or a related field.
  • Working knowledge of 12V/24V DC systems, lithium battery banks, inverter/chargers, and solar charging systems.
  • Comfortable reading wiring diagrams and schematics, and sizing wire, fuses, and breakers based on load.
  • Proficiency with crimping, soldering, and heat-shrink termination; familiarity with marine-grade components and best practices.
  • Experience with Victron, Battle Born, Lithionics, or similar RV/marine electrical platforms is a strong plus.
  • ABYC, RVTI, or equivalent certification is a plus but not required.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, work in tight spaces, stand for extended periods, and perform repetitive movements.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to produce clean, serviceable, documented work.
  • Capable of systematically troubleshooting and resolving electrical issues at the bench or in the vehicle.

Logistics: Onsite Monday – Thursday 4/10's, with occasional evenings or weekends to support launches and special events.

Our total compensation package reflects our commitment to your well-being, featuring generous paid time off and sick leave for a healthy work-life balance. We prioritize health with robust medical and dental benefits, ensuring access to quality healthcare. The compensation for this role is between $25–$35 per hour, based on experience and skill set. Beyond the tangible benefits, our workplace culture is fueled by a shared passion for exploration and excellence, creating an environment to thrive personally and professionally.

Rossmönster is an equal opportunity employer, and we encourage candidates from any background to apply.
