Solar Operator information

What is a solar operator?

A Solar Operator monitors and maintains the daily operations of solar power plants to ensure efficient electricity generation. They inspect equipment, adjust system settings, and troubleshoot issues to optimize performance. Their responsibilities often include coordinating with maintenance teams, analyzing data from power systems, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. Solar Operators play a crucial role in maximizing energy output while minimizing downtime and operational risks.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a solar operator?

As a Solar Operator, your daily responsibilities typically include monitoring the performance of solar panels and equipment, performing preventative and corrective maintenance, and responding to alarms or system faults. You will often use remote monitoring tools and SCADA systems to track system outputs and diagnose anomalies. Additionally, Solar Operators collaborate closely with maintenance crews, engineers, and sometimes utility partners to ensure optimal plant efficiency. This role often requires working outdoors and may involve shift work, especially at larger solar facilities. Staying proactive and adaptable is key to preventing downtime and supporting smooth solar plant operation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the solar operator position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solar Operator, you need strong technical knowledge of photovoltaic systems, electrical equipment operation, and general troubleshooting, often supported by a high school diploma or associate degree in a related field. Familiarity with SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems, industry safety protocols, and certifications such as OSHA or NABCEP are highly valued. Attention to detail, effective communication, and strong problem-solving abilities help Solar Operators excel in fast-paced and sometimes remote work environments. These skills ensure efficient plant operation, quick resolution of issues, and sustained solar energy production.

Is it hard to get a job as a solar operator?

Getting a job as a solar operator can vary depending on location and experience, but generally requires technical skills, knowledge of solar systems, and sometimes certifications such as NABCEP. Entry-level positions may be accessible with relevant training, while more advanced roles often demand experience and specialized knowledge. The job market for solar operators is growing as renewable energy expands.

Job description

Solar Sales Director
Location: New York, NY
Hours: Full-Time
Reports to: COO
About the Role
Brooklyn SolarWorks is a fast-growing solar design and installation company based in New York City, is looking for a driven and experienced Sales Director to elevate their solar sales operation and lead the next phase of growth. This is a high-impact leadership role for someone who brings deep knowledge of the residential solar market, a structured approach to sales process, and a genuine passion for building high-performing teams. Reporting to the COO and serving on the leadership team, the Sales Director will own the full sales function - from process design and team training to pipeline metrics and accountability culture. This role is designed for a leader who is ready to step in, establish credibility with a tenured team, and help it grow.
What You'll Do
Sales Leadership & Strategy
  • Own and drive monthly, quarterly, and annual residential solar sales targets.
  • Design and implement a structured, repeatable sales process that scales with the business.
  • Participate in leadership meetings as the voice of the sales function.
  • Develop territory and channel strategies to expand the company's footprint across NYC.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing Director to optimize lead flow, conversion, and follow-up processes.
  • As a member of the company leadership team, help shape corporate strategy and company culture.
Team Development & Accountability
  • Lead, coach, and grow a tenured sales team.
  • Establish clear KPIs, metrics, and accountability frameworks across the sales function.
  • Deliver hands-on training in your sales methodology, ensuring consistency and adoption across the team.
  • Provide regular and impactful feedback and mentorship to direct reports.
  • Foster an environment of initiative, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Process & Technology
  • Optimize CRM workflows to improve reporting, forecasting, and team productivity.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for AI-assisted and virtual sales to expand reach and efficiency.
  • Analyze pipeline data, close rates, and customer behavior to drive continuous process improvements.
Culture & Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Build strong relationships across a tenured, close-knit team - earning trust through consistency and results.
  • Work cross-functionally with Operations, Design, and Customer Experience to ensure a seamless customer experience.
  • Represent the company at industry events, trade shows, and community engagements.

What We're Looking For
Required:
  • Residential solar sales experience - this is non-negotiable; you must know the space.
  • Demonstrated track record leading and growing sales teams, ideally 10+ reps.
  • A clear, teachable sales methodology that you have implemented and refined.
  • Strong process orientation - you build systems, not just close deals.
  • Experience driving sales culture change - accountability, metrics, and initiative.
  • Comfort working with CRM platforms (Salesforce or equivalent) and data-driven reporting.
  • Excellent communication, coaching, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage change within a tenured workforce - relationship-builder first.
Nice to Have:
  • Experience with AI-assisted or virtual sales tools and strategies.
  • Familiarity with NYC residential housing and construction market.
  • Background in high-growth, entrepreneurial environments.
  • Spanish language proficiency.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive compensation commensurate with experience, including base salary and performance-based incentives. Base salary in the range of $130-$170K with bonus and commissions getting to ~$250-300K OTE.
  • Medical, dental, vision, and life insurance - employer covers 100% of employee premiums on select medical plans
  • 401(k) Retirement Plan (Traditional & Roth) with 4% tiered company matching - eligible after six months
  • Quarterly profit-sharing bonus
  • Paid Time Off + 11 company holidays
  • Pre-tax commuter transportation benefit (MTA MetroCard)
  • HSA and FSA options
  • Free Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
