How does a solar designer typically collaborate with engineers and project managers during the solar project lifecycle?

Solar Designers work closely with engineers to ensure that their system layouts are technically viable and meet safety and regulatory standards. They also collaborate with project managers to align design timelines with overall project schedules and to address site-specific challenges, such as shading or roof structure. Regular meetings and design reviews help identify potential issues early, improving project efficiency. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as changes in design can impact installation timelines and costs.

What is the difference between Solar Designer vs Solar Installer?

AspectSolar DesignerSolar Installer
CredentialsTypically requires engineering or technical certifications, design experienceRequires installation certifications, safety training
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, CAD software, client meetingsConstruction sites, rooftops, outdoor environments
Industry UsageInvolved in planning, designing, and system layoutInvolved in physical installation and wiring

Solar Designers focus on creating system plans, layouts, and ensuring optimal performance, often working in offices with CAD tools. Solar Installers physically set up the systems on-site, handling installation, wiring, and safety. Both roles are essential in the solar industry but differ in daily tasks and required skills.

What is a solar designer?

A solar designer develops an energy solution using a photovoltaic system to boost performance and improve power efficiency. In this career, you conduct an assessment of the current situation and install the cells and modules in compliance with local building codes. You then connect it to the existing equipment and test its integrity. You also seal it for peak sustainability and energy cost-savings. Many solar designers work as self-employed contractors. While you typically work on standalone projects, you may find some opportunities with solar power farms. The responsibilities are physically demanding, and adherence to safety standards to prevent falls is imperative.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a solar designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solar Designer, you need a solid understanding of electrical and mechanical engineering principles, proficiency in solar PV system design, and typically a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with design software like AutoCAD, PVsyst, Helioscope, and relevant certifications such as NABCEP are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication make someone stand out in this role. These skills are crucial for creating efficient, safe, and code-compliant solar energy systems that meet client needs and regulatory standards.

Job description

Full-Cycle Sales Representative

Sunbridge Solar is a leading solar energy provider serving homeowners and businesses in the Midwest. Our mission is to empower customers to achieve their financial and sustainability goals by making informed decisions about solar energy.

Position Overview

Sunbridge Solar is seeking motivated Full-Cycle Solar Sales Representatives who generate, manage, and close their own opportunities. Unlike the traditional setter-closer model used by many solar organizations, this role is designed for entrepreneurial sales professionals who prefer full ownership of the sales process-from prospecting to closing deals.

As a Full-Cycle Sales Representative, you will educate homeowners on the benefits of solar energy, conduct consultations, design tailored solar solutions, and guide customers through the decision-making process. Your role is to build trust, provide valuable information, and help customers make confident choices about transitioning to solar energy.

This position is ideal for self-driven professionals who want unlimited earning potential and the autonomy to run their own sales pipeline.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prospect and generate your own leads through networking, referrals, door-to-door outreach, events, and marketing initiatives.
  • Conduct in-home or virtual solar consultations with homeowners.
  • Educate customers on solar energy, system design, financial incentives, and potential savings.
  • Evaluate homes and energy usage to recommend customized solar solutions.
  • Present proposals and guide customers through the decision-making process.
  • Close solar agreements and assist customers through project onboarding.
  • Maintain consistent communication with customers throughout the installation process.
  • Represent Sunbridge Solar with professionalism, honesty, and a customer-first mindset.
  • Maintain accurate records of sales activities and pipeline management.
Independent Contractor Status

All Sales Representatives hired for this role will operate as 1099 independent contractors, not W-2 employees.

This structure allows reps to:

  • Control their own schedule and sales activities
  • Build and manage their own pipeline of opportunities
  • Maximize income through performance-based commissions
  • Operate with entrepreneurial freedom while representing a respected solar brand
What We Look For
  • Strong self-motivation and entrepreneurial mindset
  • Ability to generate and close your own leads
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Integrity and commitment to ethical, transparent sales practices
  • Passion for renewable energy and sustainability
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with internal teams

Preferred but not required:

  • Solar sales experience
  • In-home sales experience
  • Commission-based sales background
Why Join Sunbridge Solar

At Sunbridge Solar, we believe in building a team that shares our commitment to sustainability, transparency, and customer education. Our company culture values collaboration, growth, and empowering people to make a real impact through renewable energy solutions.

Unlike many solar companies that rely on high-pressure tactics, Sunbridge Solar takes an educational and transparent approach. We provide the resources, expertise, and support customers need to confidently transition to clean, renewable energy while reducing energy costs and environmental impact.

Our reputation is built on quality equipment, highly trained technicians, and exceptional service. We believe that informed customers make the best decisions, and our team is dedicated to delivering a professional and trustworthy solar experience from consultation through installation.

Joining our team means you'll have the opportunity to:

  • Help homeowners reduce energy costs and environmental impact
  • Work with a trusted solar brand with over a decade of experience
  • Earn uncapped commission income
  • Operate with the autonomy of an independent contractor
  • Be part of a mission-driven industry shaping the future of energy
