Job description

The Civil Engineer is responsible for the design, analysis, and development of civil engineering components for utility-scale solar PV projects. This includes grading, drainage, road design, hydrology and hydraulic studies and foundation design. The role ensures compliance with applicable codes, standards, and environmental regulations while optimizing designs for safety, constructability, and cost efficiency.

The Civil Engineer will prepare technical documentation, perform engineering studies, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver complete, buildable project designs that support successful project execution.

Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities:

Civil Design and Analysis

  • Perform grading design, stormwater management, drainage systems, and site layout for utility-scale solar projects.
  • Conduct hydrologic and hydraulic analyses, including watershed modeling and flood studies.
  • Analyze topographic survey campaigns, geological-geotechnical studies and pull-out tests.
  • Design access roads, pavement sections, and site infrastructure.
  • Support foundation design for solar arrays and related structures.
  • Apply erosion and sediment control practices in accordance with project and regulatory requirements.

Hydrology & Environmental Engineering

  • Perform hydrological studies using tools such as HEC-RAS and HEC-HMS.
  • Analyze site conditions and support development of drainage reports and stormwater pollution prevention plans (SWPPP).
  • Utilize GIS-based tools (QGIS, Global Mapper) for terrain modeling and site analysis.

Drawings and Technical Deliverables

  • Develop civil engineering drawings including grading plans, drainage plans, details and profiles.
  • Collaborate with designers/drafters to produce construction-ready documents.
  • Ensure accuracy and quality of all engineering deliverables.

Coordination and Review

  • Coordinate with electrical, structural, and environmental teams to ensure integrated project design.
  • Review and validate subcontractor and vendor designs and deliverables.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal codes and standards.

Technical Documentation and Studies

  • Prepare engineering reports, calculations, and design documentation.
  • Utilize historical data, surveys, and geotechnical reports to inform design decisions.
  • Support development of topographic surveys and geotechnical investigations.

Interface and Stakeholder Management

  • Coordinate with subcontractors and vendors to establish technical requirements and project scope.
  • Participate in project meetings with internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Provide technical support during permitting, procurement, and construction phases.

Requirements

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering
  • 3+ years of experience, preferably in utility-scale solar PV or large infrastructure projects
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred

Technical Skills:

  • Experience with HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, QGIS, Global Mapper, and AutoCAD/Civil 3D
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Grading and site development design
    • Drainage and stormwater systems
    • Road and pavement design
    • Hydrology and hydraulics
    • Erosion and sediment control practices

Additional Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with construction methods and EPC project environments
