Position Overview Title: Construction Inspector Department: Public Works Status: Full-Time FLSA: Non-Exempt POSITION OVERVIEW Reports to the Construction Inspection Supervisor and is responsible for inspecting the safe, effective, and efficient construction of public works projects to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, various codes and departmental policies. ESSENTIAL DUTIES Inspects work quality and materials relating to the construction of public works projects and to ensure compliance with approved plans, specifications, codes, and ordinances. Reviews plans and specifications of assigned project and attend pre-construction conferences with engineers, contractors, developers, city staff, etc.

to discuss general information of assigned project. Checks for construction permits and inspect materials for identification and conformance to specifications. Inspects various structures such as street systems, drainage facilities, water and sewer systems, and other construction; checks line, grade, size, elevation, and location of structures and improvements for conformance with plans, specifications and regulations.

Takes and prepares samples or observes sampling of materials for examination or analysis by laboratories. Observes quality testing. Observes and inspects work during progress and upon completion; performs re-inspections after completion; issues stop work orders informing Public Works Supervisor and other staff as appropriate.

Reviews "As-Built" plans for accuracy. Coordinates work with contractors, property owners, developers, City and franchise utilities, and other City departments. Prepares a variety of activity records and reports.

Reviews pay estimates for verification of construction quantities. Performs related duties as assigned. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, LICENSES & CERTIFICATION Education - Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Experience -At least 4 years construction inspection experience in Public Works construction or5years'experience in street maintenance, drainage, waterand/or wastewater. OR Any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work. Valid Texas State Driver's License at hire date, and eligibility for coverage under the City of Hutto vehicle insurance provider.

Prefer completion of construction inspection courses similar to such courses administered by the Texas Engineering Extension Service, including Duties and Responsibilities of Inspectors, Basic Concrete, Underground Utilities, Contract Administration and Management, Reading Plans and Specifications, Basic Surveying, Basic Soil Technology, Contract Documents and Site Preparation, and Basic Asphalt Technology. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES Knowledge of principles, methods, terminology, materials, equipment, and safety hazards and prevention regarding public works Construction activities. Mathematics including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.

Soil mechanics and geology. Knowledge of engineering mechanics of structures. Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, codes, and departmental policies governing the construction of assigned public works projects.

Survey trade principles and practices. Traffic control devices and standards. Accessibility standards.

Skilled in identifying defects and faults in construction. Skilled in materials sampling, quality testing equipment and procedures, and estimate procedures. Ability to interpret and apply applicable laws, regulations, codes, and departmental policies governing the Construction of assigned City public works projects.

Ability to analyze, understand interpret engineering plans, maps, and specification's, and prepare accurate engineering records Ability to deal firmly and tactfully with contractors, engineers, and property owners. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Ability to Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.

Ability to Keep up with email and other forms of communication in a timely manner. Ability to detect and locate faulty materials and workmanship and determine the stage of construction during which defects are most easily found and remedied. Ability to prepare technical reports.

Ability to Utilize tools and equipment used in construction, engineering and surveying trade including level, slump cone, engineer's scale, measuring wheel, calculator, computer, and pin finder. Ability to recognize inefficiencies and problems regarding standard construction details and practices and make recommendations for improvement. The employee must occasionally lift and or move up to 50 pounds.
