What is a software developer?

Software developers are professionals who design, create, test, and maintain software applications or systems. They use programming languages and development tools to build software that meets user needs or solves specific problems. Their responsibilities can include writing code, debugging, collaborating with other team members, and updating existing programs. Software developers work in a variety of industries, including technology, finance, healthcare, and more.

What are different types of software jobs?

Software jobs include software engineers, software developers, programmers, information technology or network systems specialists, QA testers, or developers who use existing tools, such as business information software, to develop new interfaces for institutional clients. Many of these jobs can be broken down further. For example, some developers work on front-end duties, such as designing interfaces for users. These may be for desktop, mobile, or web applications. Back-end programmers and developers, on the other hand, create the frameworks and logic that dictate how a program works. QA testers often work closely with developers to test programs before being released publicly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with coding languages (like Python, Java, or C++), version control systems (such as Git), and experience with software development frameworks are commonly required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and teamwork are crucial soft skills for collaborating on projects and delivering robust solutions. These skills ensure the development of high-quality, reliable software that meets user needs and business objectives.

What are some common challenges software professionals face when working on large-scale projects?

Software professionals working on large-scale projects often encounter challenges such as coordinating with cross-functional teams, managing complex codebases, and ensuring consistent communication across distributed teams. Balancing the need for rapid development with maintaining code quality and meeting strict deadlines can also be demanding. Adapting to evolving requirements and integrating new technologies while minimizing disruptions are common aspects of the role, making strong organizational and collaboration skills essential.

Acquia empowers the worldโ€™s most ambitious brands to create digital customer experiences that matter. With open source Drupal at its core, the Acquia Digital Experience Platform (DXP) enables marketers, developers, and IT operations teams at thousands of global organizations to rapidly compose and deploy digital products and services that engage customers, enhance conversions, and help businesses stand out.

Headquartered in Boston, MA, Acquia is a Great Place to Work-CertifiedTM company, is listed as one of the worldโ€™s top software companies by The Software Report, and is positioned as a market leader by the analyst community. We are Acquia. We are building for the future and we want you to be a part of it!

Career Exploration at Acquia

Our recruitment process is designed to empower you in making the most informed decisions. Acquia is committed to providing an inclusive, transparent, efficient, and educational interview experience that cultivates exploration into career opportunities at Acquia

You will discover the opportunity to grow your career here and learn from a global team that empowers you to exceed boundaries and achieve the extraordinary.

Acquia is the digital experience platform built for a world where your audience isnโ€™t only human. Itโ€™s agents too.

As AI agents become active participants in how people discover, consume, and act on digital content, Acquia gives enterprise teams the platform to create, manage, and distribute experiences designed for both. Powered by agentic AI that orchestrates โ€“ not just advises โ€“ Acquia automates complex digital workflows within the governance guardrails large organizations require.

The worldโ€™s #1 Drupal hosting provider, Acquia brings together Content Management, Digital Asset Management, and Product Information Management in a single AI-powered Command Center: Acquia Source.

Acquia. Built for every audience, human or otherwise.

The Role:

Acquia is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join our Web Governance Backend Engineering team. This is first and foremost a handsโ€‘on engineering role โ€“ you will spend the majority of your time designing, building, and shipping products and features our customers love and depend on. Enterprise reliability, observability, and scale are your standards. Youโ€™ll also play a meaningful mentoring role, helping to lift the engineering capability of those around you.

We are an AI Native engineering organization. Our engineers work alongside AI as a true collaborator โ€“ designing, building, and shipping features. Youโ€™ll be expected to quickly ramp up on AI tools, delegate work to AI, review and verify AI-generated output with the same rigor as any code, and continuously adapt your workflow as capabilities evolve.

Engineers who thrive at Acquia treat AI as a force multiplier while maintaining full accountability for what they ship.

Key Responsibilities
  • Write and ship production code daily โ€“ you are an active contributor.
  • AI is at the core of everything we do. We are undergoing a deep transformation to become AI-native. Engineers wonโ€™t write code but technical specs, and AI agents implement them.
  • Mentor engineers as a natural extension of your work โ€“ sharing knowledge through code reviews, pairing sessions, and design discussions, not through management overhead.
  • Own the entire product lifecycle: tech specs, implementation, testing, delivery. โ€œDoneโ€ is when the customer is getting value out of what weโ€™ve built.
Desired Skills

We are an organization that embraces innovation and the potential of AI to enhance our processes and improve our work. We are always looking for individuals who are open to learning new technologies and collaborating with AI tools to achieve our goals.

Acquia is proud to provide bestโ€‘inโ€‘class benefits to help our employees and their families maintain a healthy body and mind.

Core Benefits include:

  • competitive healthcare coverage
  • wellness programs
  • take it when you need it time off
  • parental leave
  • recognition programs
  • and much more!

Acquia is an equal opportunity (EEO) employer. Qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, protected veterans status or any other protected status or characteristic under federal, state or local law unrelated to the ability to perform the job.

We are seeking an AI-Native candidate who treats AI not as an external tool, but as a fundamental extension of their cognitive workflow. The ideal candidate possesses an orchestration mindsetโ€” the ability to skillfully prompt, manage, and direct AI to navigate complexityโ€”and maintains a high degree of AI fluency.

You should be characterized by radical adaptability and a โ€œbuilderโ€ mentality, showing a restless drive to transform traditional work processes into agentic workflows. Beyond technical proficiency, we value intellectual humility: the willingness to constantly unlearn old methods in favor of more efficient, AIโ€‘augmented processes. You donโ€™t just use AI to do your job; you use it to redefine what your job can achieve.
