What is a software developer?

Software developers are professionals who design, create, test, and maintain software applications or systems. They use programming languages and development tools to build software that meets user needs or solves specific problems. Their responsibilities can include writing code, debugging, collaborating with other team members, and updating existing programs. Software developers work in a variety of industries, including technology, finance, healthcare, and more.

What are different types of software jobs?

Software jobs include software engineers, software developers, programmers, information technology or network systems specialists, QA testers, or developers who use existing tools, such as business information software, to develop new interfaces for institutional clients. Many of these jobs can be broken down further. For example, some developers work on front-end duties, such as designing interfaces for users. These may be for desktop, mobile, or web applications. Back-end programmers and developers, on the other hand, create the frameworks and logic that dictate how a program works. QA testers often work closely with developers to test programs before being released publicly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with coding languages (like Python, Java, or C++), version control systems (such as Git), and experience with software development frameworks are commonly required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and teamwork are crucial soft skills for collaborating on projects and delivering robust solutions. These skills ensure the development of high-quality, reliable software that meets user needs and business objectives.

What are some common challenges software professionals face when working on large-scale projects?

Software professionals working on large-scale projects often encounter challenges such as coordinating with cross-functional teams, managing complex codebases, and ensuring consistent communication across distributed teams. Balancing the need for rapid development with maintaining code quality and meeting strict deadlines can also be demanding. Adapting to evolving requirements and integrating new technologies while minimizing disruptions are common aspects of the role, making strong organizational and collaboration skills essential.

Career Opportunities with DaySmart Software

Careers At DaySmart Software

Current job opportunities are posted here as they become available.

DaySmart supercharges experience-based businesses with innovative, industry-specific software services that power customer and revenue growth. With thousands of partners worldwide and dozens of industry awards, we provide best-inclass solutions to accelerate their business. TeamUp, a DaySmart product, is the most recommended management software for in-person and online classes at fitness studios, boxes, and gyms worldwide.

Position:

As a Senior Software Engineer at TeamUp, you will play a critical role in evolving our platform to meet the needs of a rapidly growing customer base. You will be a key contributor to the design, development, and maintenance of our core API services, application logic, and data models, as well as the Vue single-page applications our customers use every day — ensuring a secure, reliable, and performant experience end to end. You will leverage your deep understanding of Python and frameworks like Django and FastAPI to modernize our application and drive technical excellence within the team. We are an AI-first engineering organization. We expect our engineers to work fluently with AI coding assistants and agentic development tools as a normal part of the daily workflow — using them to plan, generate, review, and test code — and to apply the same engineering judgment to AI output that they would to their own. You will also help us build AI-powered capabilities into the product itself. This is an opportunity to make a direct impact on the success of thousands of fitness businesses worldwide, working closely with product teams and even directly with customers to understand and address their needs.

Responsibilities:
  • Design, develop, and maintain core API services and backend systems using Python, Django, and FastAPI. Contribute to the modernization of our application, transitioning from a legacy Django MVC architecture to an APIfirst approach.
  • Optimize application performance and scalability to handle increasing user demand and data volume.
  • Design and implement data models and database schemas to support new features and functionalities.
  • Build and extend customer-facing features in our Vue single-page applications, and partner with frontend engineers to define API contracts that make integration seamless.
  • Write clean, well-documented, and testable code, participating actively in code reviews to ensure high-quality standards.
  • Use AI coding assistants and agentic development tools as a core part of your workflow — scoping tasks, generating and refactoring code, writing tests, and reviewing output critically before it ships.
  • Help design and ship AI-powered product capabilities, from evaluating models and APIs to building the data and retrieval plumbing behind them.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve production issues, working closely with the operations team to ensure platform stability.
  • Participate in on-call rotation as needed to ensure platform reliability and availability (future requirement). Actively engage with product managers and customers to understand their needs and translate them into technical solutions.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to knowledge sharing within the team.
Requirements:
  • 5+ years of experience in backend software development using Python and frameworks like Django and FastAPI.
  • Strong understanding of RESTful API design principles and best practices.
  • Proficiency in SQL and experience with relational databases (e.g., MySQL).
  • Experience with asynchronous programming and task queues (e.g., Celery).
  • Demonstrated fluency with AI-assisted development — daily use of tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, or GitHub Copilot, with sound judgment about when to rely on generated output and when to write it yourself.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred:
  • Experience with cloud platforms, preferably AWS, and related services.
  • Familiarity with containerization technologies (e.g., Docker) and orchestration platforms (e.g., Kubernetes).
  • Experience with event-driven architectures and message queues (e.g., Kafka).
  • Experience shipping LLM-backed product features — prompt design, retrieval-augmented generation, vector search, or evaluation harnesses for model output.
  • Depth in the Vue ecosystem (Pinia, Vite, Nuxt) and component or end-to-end testing.
  • Experience building or maintaining internal AI tooling, agents, or developer-productivity automation.
  • Contributions to open-source projects or active participation in the Python community.

The salary for this role is $140,000 - $160,000 per year. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, internal equity, etc.

What We Offer
  • Competitive salary and benefits including medical, dental, vision, HSA, FSA, and more!
  • 401k plan with company match on your contributions.
  • Open PTO and a generous paid holiday schedule.
  • Supportive work environment with the flexibility to work where/how you want – in-office, remote, or hybrid.
  • Opportunities to ensure you are always learning and growing.
How We Work

This will be a US based remote position. We offer flexible work arrangements including fully remote, in person or hybrid opportunities.

  • Wayne, PA
  • Austin, TX

Many DaySmart employees primarily work from home, and our teams are structured to operate efficiently in a distributed environment. While we don’t always share a physical office, we work together closely through remote collaboration practices.

We maintain a highly collaborative culture and expect all employees to actively participate in meetings, discussions, and team interactions. This includes joining scheduled video calls with cameras on, contributing to conversations, and being fully present.

We believe that strong communication and visual connection are essential to maintaining alignment, accountability, and trust across teams. At DaySmart, working remotely comes with the responsibility to show up, engage, and collaborate with intention.
