What is a software test?

Software test jobs involve evaluating and verifying that software applications function as intended. Professionals in this field, often called software testers or quality assurance (QA) engineers, design and execute tests to identify bugs, usability issues, or security vulnerabilities before products are released. They may use automated tools, manual testing methods, or a combination of both to ensure product quality. Effective software testers help improve software reliability and user satisfaction by catching issues early in the development process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software tester, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Tester, you need a strong understanding of software development life cycles, test case design, and quality assurance principles, typically backed by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with test management tools (like JIRA or TestRail), automation frameworks (such as Selenium), and certifications like ISTQB are highly valued. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication help testers identify bugs and collaborate with developers. These skills ensure reliable, high-quality software, reduced defects, and successful project outcomes.

What are some common challenges software test professionals face when collaborating with development teams?

Software test professionals frequently encounter challenges such as communication gaps, differing project priorities, and tight deadlines when working with development teams. It's important to maintain clear and ongoing communication to ensure that requirements and bug reports are fully understood. Regular meetings, shared documentation, and using collaborative tools like Jira or Slack can help bridge gaps and foster a more cohesive workflow. Building trust and mutual respect between testing and development teams is key to efficiently identifying and resolving issues, leading to higher-quality software releases.

What is the difference between Software Test vs Software Developer?

AspectSoftware TestSoftware Developer
Primary RoleDesigns and executes tests to identify bugs and ensure software qualityDesigns, develops, and maintains software applications
Skills & CertificationsKnowledge of testing tools, scripting, QA methodologies, certifications like ISTQBProgramming languages, software design, certifications like Microsoft Certified or Java certifications
Work EnvironmentOften in QA teams, testing labs, or collaborative environments with developersTypically in development teams, coding environments, and project planning sessions
Industry UsageCommonly employed in software companies, IT firms, and product developmentCore role in software companies, startups, and tech industries

While both roles are essential in software development, Software Test focuses on quality assurance through testing, whereas Software Developers create the actual software applications. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or collaboration focus.

Job Responsiblities:
  • Design, implement, and maintain scalable test automation frameworks for web, mobile, and API testing (Playwright/WebDriverIO/Appium).
  • Lead automation development for user stories and features, ensuring functional, regression, and integration coverage.
  • Collaborate with developers, product managers, and QE peers to define acceptance criteria, build test strategies, and ensure complete test coverage.
  • Develop BDD-style test cases using tools such as Cucumber or SpecFlow and ensure traceability from requirements to test coverage.
  • Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Jenkins, GitHub Actions) and actively troubleshoot failures.
  • Validate RESTful APIs using Postman, Swagger, or similar tools; build API automation frameworks with Karate, or other libraries.
  • Conduct exploratory, cross-browser, and cross-platform testing and ensure consistent user experiences on Android/iOS web and native apps.
  • Participate in code/test reviews, sprint planning, retrospectives, and Agile ceremonies to advocate for quality and testability.
  • Summarize test results, raise high-quality defect reports, and contribute to Go/No-Go release decisions
  • Assist in incorporating AI-based tools to accelerate test execution or flakiness detection (optional but preferred).
  • Provide mentorship to junior quality engineers and help promote a quality-first mindset across the team.
  • Comply with health and safety guidelines and rules; managers should also ensure compliance across their teams.
  • Protect Chamberlain Group's reputation by keeping information confidential.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reading professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.
  • Contribute to the team effort by accomplishing related results and participating on projects as needed.

Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Computer Science or related field
  • 5-8 years of hands-on experience in software quality engineering, with a minimum of 3 years focused on automation.
  • Solid experience in JavaScript/TypeScript with frameworks such as Playwright, WebDriverIO, or Cypress.
  • Hands-on experience testing RESTful APIs and working with API automation tools such as Karate, Restassured using java or similar.
  • Proven experience working in Agile development environments and contributing to sprint-based delivery.
  • Experience working with cloud-based platforms (AWS/Azure/Google Cloud Platform) and microservice architectures.
  • Experience in integrating test automation into CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with test management (TestRail, QMetry), bug tracking (JIRA), and version control systems (Git).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Strong proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript and test automation frameworks.
  • Solid understanding of QE methodologies, software development lifecycles, and Agile practices.
  • Strong experience in BDD/TDD practices and writing executable test specifications.
  • Comfortable testing across web, mobile, and API layers.
  • Strong debugging and analytical skills to identify root causes of issues in complex systems.
  • Familiarity with mobile app testing using real devices/emulators on Android and iOS.
  • Good interpersonal and written communication skills to collaborate with distributed teams.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative in solving problems and improving processes.

Preferred Job Requirements:
  • Quality Assurance certifications (ISTQB or similar).
  • Cloud platform certifications (AWS, Azure).
  • Exposure to AI-based testing accelerators (e.g., model-based testing, smart selectors).
  • Experience in testing IoT or embedded systems (preferred but not mandatory).
  • Experience with non-relational databases like Couchbase or Neo4J.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Basic understanding of performance, accessibility, or security testing.
