What is a software test?

Software test jobs involve evaluating and verifying that software applications function as intended. Professionals in this field, often called software testers or quality assurance (QA) engineers, design and execute tests to identify bugs, usability issues, or security vulnerabilities before products are released. They may use automated tools, manual testing methods, or a combination of both to ensure product quality. Effective software testers help improve software reliability and user satisfaction by catching issues early in the development process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software tester, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Tester, you need a strong understanding of software development life cycles, test case design, and quality assurance principles, typically backed by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with test management tools (like JIRA or TestRail), automation frameworks (such as Selenium), and certifications like ISTQB are highly valued. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication help testers identify bugs and collaborate with developers. These skills ensure reliable, high-quality software, reduced defects, and successful project outcomes.

What are some common challenges software test professionals face when collaborating with development teams?

Software test professionals frequently encounter challenges such as communication gaps, differing project priorities, and tight deadlines when working with development teams. It's important to maintain clear and ongoing communication to ensure that requirements and bug reports are fully understood. Regular meetings, shared documentation, and using collaborative tools like Jira or Slack can help bridge gaps and foster a more cohesive workflow. Building trust and mutual respect between testing and development teams is key to efficiently identifying and resolving issues, leading to higher-quality software releases.

What is the difference between Software Test vs Software Developer?

AspectSoftware TestSoftware Developer
Primary RoleDesigns and executes tests to identify bugs and ensure software qualityDesigns, develops, and maintains software applications
Skills & CertificationsKnowledge of testing tools, scripting, QA methodologies, certifications like ISTQBProgramming languages, software design, certifications like Microsoft Certified or Java certifications
Work EnvironmentOften in QA teams, testing labs, or collaborative environments with developersTypically in development teams, coding environments, and project planning sessions
Industry UsageCommonly employed in software companies, IT firms, and product developmentCore role in software companies, startups, and tech industries

While both roles are essential in software development, Software Test focuses on quality assurance through testing, whereas Software Developers create the actual software applications. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or collaboration focus.

The Senior Software Engineer, Test Automation is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining automated tests and test infrastructure for high-content imaging software. This role works with software development, quality assurance, product ownership, and engineering leadership teams to improve automated coverage, integrate end-to-end workflows between products, monitor continuous integration pipelines, and provide clear, timely information about software build quality and release readiness.
This position reports to the Supervisor, Software Engineering and is part of the Imaging Software Engineering team located in Downingtown, PA. This is a 100% on-site role.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
  • Automated Test Development: Design, implement, debug, and maintain reliable automated end-to-end and integration tests for complex imaging software using Cypress and related testing technologies.

  • Cross-Product Test Architecture: Collaborate with software development and quality assurance teams to develop reusable test frameworks and automate workflows that span multiple products, services, and instrument-control applications.

  • CI/CD, Build Quality, and Root-Cause Analysis: Monitor automated test pipelines and software builds daily; investigate complex or intermittent failures using evidence from multiple sources; distinguish product defects from test or infrastructure issues; communicate which builds are suitable for further verification and validation; and improve test reliability, diagnostics, processes, and infrastructure to prevent recurrence.

  • Test Strategy and Coverage: Translate product risks, customer workflows, and acceptance criteria into automated test designs and backlog stories; identify gaps in regression coverage and prioritize automation that delivers the greatest quality and business impact.

  • Technical Leadership and Collaboration: Work independently with product owners, software leads, quality assurance engineers, engineering managers, and developers; lead focused automation initiatives, build consensus on quality issues, and serve as a technical resource for colleagues with less automation experience.

The essential requirements of the job include:
  • Education and experience: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline with 5+ years of professional software development or software test automation experience; equivalent directly relevant experience may be considered.

  • Test automation expertise: Demonstrated experience designing and maintaining automated end-to-end or integration tests for commercial software, including practical expertise with Cypress or a comparable browser automation framework and JavaScript or TypeScript.

  • Continuous integration: Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines, monitoring pipeline and build health, diagnosing failures, and communicating actionable quality and release-readiness information.

  • Software engineering practices: Proficiency with Git, package-management and build tools such as npm, REST-based applications, test design patterns, defect tracking, and Agile development practices.

  • Independent problem solving and collaboration: Ability to solve complex technical problems with minimal guidance, perform effective root-cause analysis, lead small initiatives, explain difficult technical information clearly, and build consensus across cross-functional teams.

It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:
  • Scientific or instrument-control software: Testing laboratory instruments, imaging systems, robotic systems, or other software connected to physical hardware.

  • High-content imaging: Familiarity with microscopy, image acquisition and analysis workflows, or life science applications.

  • Cross-product automation: Building automated workflows that coordinate multiple desktop applications, browser applications, backend services, or independently released products.

  • Additional test technologies: Experience with Angular application testing, API testing, Windows desktop automation, test reporting systems, or improving the reliability and observability of large regression suites.

Travel, Motor Vehicle Record & Physical/Environment Requirements:
  • Minimal travel expected-one week or less per year-for internal planning activities only.

  • This position requires working 100% on-site at the Downingtown, PA location.
