What is a software test engineer?

A software test engineer conducts quality assurance tests on software to make sure programs are functioning properly. The three types of testing strategies are black box, where the tester is not familiar with the software, white box, where the tester is aware of the software’s internal structure, and gray box, which is a combination of the two. Responsibilities in this job include running diagnostic tests with a critical mindset, assessing the functionality, and reporting the findings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software test engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Test Engineer, you need a solid understanding of software development life cycles, test methodologies, and proficiency in programming languages such as Python or Java, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with automation tools like Selenium, JUnit, or TestNG, and knowledge of bug tracking systems such as Jira are typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication set standout engineers apart by enabling thorough defect identification and clear reporting. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring software reliability, meeting quality standards, and facilitating smooth collaboration across development teams.

What are some common challenges faced by software test engineers when working with cross-functional development teams?

Software Test Engineers often encounter challenges such as aligning testing timelines with rapid development cycles, ensuring clear communication of bugs and requirements, and adapting to evolving project priorities. Collaborating closely with developers, product managers, and UX designers requires proactive communication and flexibility, especially when dealing with ambiguous requirements or shifting deadlines. To succeed, it's important to maintain detailed documentation, participate actively in agile ceremonies, and foster a collaborative attitude to resolve issues efficiently and ensure high-quality software releases.

Job description

Join Frontend Frameworks at Workiva and help build the internal frameworks and tools that Workiva's frontend engineers use to deliver customer-facing products. The FRESH team owns the application shell, microfrontend integration layer, and the UI surfaces that tie Workiva's product experience together. We're executing a major transition to TypeScript and React as our primary frontend stack, and we need strong engineers who can execute at pace, ship quality code, and grow in a team that moves fast.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will be a core contributor to that transition, writing production TypeScript and React, participating in technical decision-making, and helping raise the quality bar for the team around you.

    What You'll Do

    • Build and maintain frontend features and components in TypeScript and React across our shell and microfrontend surfaces

    • Contribute to technical discussions around architecture, patterns, and approach within the team

    • Collaborate with cross-functional partners, product, design, and other engineering teams, to deliver well-integrated, high-quality solutions

    • Optimize UI performance and responsiveness to deliver a smooth user experience

    • Write clean, efficient, maintainable code that follows team standards and best practices

    • Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback to peers

    • Develop and execute automated tests (unit, integration, functional) with a focus on reliability

    • Debug and troubleshoot issues across frontend surfaces and integration points

    • Collaborate with support teams in triaging and resolving production issues

    • Mentor and support less experienced engineers on the team

    • Leverage AI tooling to make your work more effective

    What You'll Need

    Minimum Qualifications

    • 2+ years of relevant experience with a Bachelor's Degree, or equivalent applicable experience

    • Experience in frontend development

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Strong experience with TypeScript and React in production applications

    • Familiarity with microfrontend architecture or multi-team frontend environments

    • Solid debugging skills across complex frontend systems

    • Interest in or experience with AI-assisted and agent-accelerated development workflows

    • Strong communication skills, comfortable working across engineering, product, and design

    • Experience working in an agile development environment with a focus on continuous delivery

    Travel Requirements and Working Conditions

    • Willingness to travel up to 15% for team and corporate meetings, fostering relationships and representing company interests
    • Reliable internet access for any period of time working remotely, as we embrace flexible work arrangements

    How You'll Be Rewarded

Salary range in the US: $111,000.00 - $180,000.00

A discretionary bonus typically paid annually

Restricted Stock Units granted at time of hire

401(k) match and comprehensive employee benefits package
