The term 'Software Software' appears to be a typographical error or redundancy. Typically, the intended job title is 'Software Engineer' or 'Software Developer.' These professionals are responsible for designing, developing, testing, and maintaining software applications or systems. They use programming languages and engineering principles to solve problems and create software solutions for businesses or consumers. Their work can range from building desktop applications to developing complex cloud-based systems.

How does a software software typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

Software Engineers frequently work alongside product managers, designers, and quality assurance specialists to deliver robust solutions. Collaboration usually involves regular meetings to clarify requirements, code reviews to ensure quality, and agile ceremonies like stand-ups or sprint planning to coordinate progress. Effective communication and adaptability are essential, as priorities and project scopes may shift based on feedback from various stakeholders. This teamwork fosters a dynamic environment where engineers can both learn from and contribute to multiple areas of the product lifecycle.

Job description

Your Role at a Glance

The Director of Software Engineering Motion Technology is responsible for the strategy, development, coordination, and staffing of the globally distributed engineering teams that build Mastercam's toolpath and motion technology — the core of the product's value to customers. This role oversees the software development lifecycle for the toolpath domain, ensuring the delivery of high-quality software solutions, while owning the budget for the domain and ensuring resources are effectively allocated and utilized.

Beyond current product delivery, this role owns the multi-year evolution of Mastercam's motion planning technology: the development of next-generation motion capabilities designed to serve multiple business units within the Group, their deployment across cloud, hybrid-cloud, and desktop environments, and a sustained, long-term roadmap that continues to strengthen the desktop application. The Director bridges long-term platform investment with near- and mid-term product outcomes, in close partnership with Product Management, Architecture, Applied Research, and business unit stakeholders.

This role requires a strategic thinker with a deep technical background in CAM/toolpath technology and excellent leadership skills.

How You'll Drive SuccessToolpath & Motion Strategy
  • In collaboration with key stakeholders, define and own the long-term toolpath and motion technology roadmap, aligned with Mastercam's product, platform, and technology strategy.
  • Lead the development of Mastercam's next-generation motion planning technology as a durable, multi-year platform investment, from architecture through incremental delivery into shipping products.
  • Drive the evolution of toolpath technology toward cloud and hybrid-cloud architectures while ensuring a sustained flow of value back into the desktop application.
  • Partner with business units across the Group to position motion planning technology for cross-BU adoption, aligning requirements, interfaces, and delivery commitments.
  • Partner with Applied Research to transition validated research outcomes in motion planning into production-quality, supportable engineering deliverables.
  • Own build, partner, and buy evaluations for motion and toolpath technology components, balancing strategic control, cost, and time to market.
  • Safeguard Mastercam's intellectual property in motion and toolpath technology, including supporting patent activities and ensuring appropriate protection of strategic technology assets.
SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT
  • Develop and implement software engineering strategies, standards, and processes to ensure high-quality and timely delivery of software products.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product management, design, and QA, to define and prioritize product features and requirements.
  • Oversee the architecture and design of toolpath and motion software systems, ensuring scalability, reliability, performance, and security across desktop and cloud deployments.
  • Drive continuous improvement in software development practices, tools, and methodologies, including the responsible adoption of AI-assisted and agentic development workflows with appropriate security and quality governance.
  • Own the engineering budget for the toolpath domain, including project timelines, resource allocation, and financial planning and reporting for capitalized development projects.
  • Stay up to date with industry trends and emerging technologies to ensure the company remains competitive.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and excellence within the engineering team.
LEADERSHIP & TEAM DEVELOPMENT
  • Establish a collaborative and high-performing environment across multiple globally distributed development teams, fostering innovation and continuous learning.
  • Directly manage engineering managers, and individual contributors as needed, ensuring teams are appropriately staffed, funded, and led.
  • Mentor and develop team members, providing guidance and support to enhance their capabilities and performance.
  • Provide proactive alignment and context for team members, ensuring clear communication centered on performance and positive progress toward team objectives.
  • Work closely with the VP, Software Engineering to execute innovation and development initiatives, ensuring timely translation of product strategies into sound development solutions.
CROSS-FUNCTIONAL & CROSS-BU COLLABORATION
  • Partner closely with the Software Engineering management team, Architects, Applied Research, and Product leadership to align toolpath and motion initiatives with execution priorities.
  • Act as a thought leader for motion and toolpath technology across the organization and the wider Group, influencing architectural direction, engineering practices, and technology adoption.
  • Communicate progress, risks, and outcomes clearly to executive and senior leadership.
  • Contribute to strategic planning activities within Software Engineering and the broader technology organization.

  • Proven track record of success delivering complex software solutions in a timely manner and within budget.
  • Deep domain expertise in CAM, toolpath generation, motion planning, CNC machining, or closely related geometric/manufacturing computing domains.
  • Strong technical expertise in agile software development, with proven architecture and design expertise and hands‑on knowledge of modern programming languages and tools such as C++, C#, Python, and Git. Experience developing in Visual Studio for Windows is a plus.
  • Solid financial acumen, including budget ownership and experience managing capitalized software development projects.
  • Demonstrated success leading multi-year platform or technology initiatives spanning multiple teams or business units.
  • Experience architecting or delivering cloud or hybrid‑cloud services alongside established desktop products is preferred.
  • Experience adopting or scaling modern AI-assisted engineering practices, including agentic development workflows, is a plus.
