A software project manager works in an information technology role to manage a company’s software product development and meet project deadlines. As a software project manager, you work with cross-functional teams in various departments to discuss what is and isn’t feasible with current software and generally help manage expectations. Your duties include overseeing product development lifecycles, documenting projects, coordinating product demonstrations, evaluating existing systems, drawing up budgets, mitigating risks, and helping develop and maintain company-wide standards. Throughout your career, you’re expected to keep up to date with industry standards and developments in software.

What does a software project manager do?

A Software Project Manager is responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing software development projects. They coordinate between different teams, manage resources, set project timelines, and ensure the final product meets client requirements. Their role involves risk management, budget control, and regular communication with stakeholders to keep projects on track. Effective software project managers help deliver quality software solutions on time and within budget.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Project Manager, you need a solid background in software development processes, project management methodologies, and a relevant degree such as computer science or information technology. An exciting and challenging position exists as a Project Manager at CoolIT’s head office in Calgary, Alberta. In this role you will report into the Product department and facilitate the execution of key internal and external development projects. Projects may include the development of our more complex Coolant Distribution Units (CDUs) and Passive Coolant Loops (PCLs), and larger continuous improvement projects. This role sets project execution standards, mentors other Project Managers, and ensures project outcomes drive business value and competitive advantage. This is a great opportunity for highly skilled Project Managers with experience in the Advanced Technology sector.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  •  Lead large, complex NPI and strategic improvement projects, driving alignment with business objectives and technical innovation.
  • Define project scope, requirements, schedules, budgets, and resource plans with minimal oversight, ensuring cross-functional accountability.
  • Anticipate and mitigate execution risks across engineering, manufacturing, test, and supply chain functions.
  • Mentor and support Project Managers in applying best practices, risk management, and communication strategies.
  • Drive performance through advanced use of project tools (e.g., MS Project, ClickUp), custom dashboards, and KPI tracking.
  • Apply structured change management processes to maintain project control and stakeholder trust.
  • Lead regular program reviews and executive briefings, escalating issues proactively with data-driven insights.
  • Facilitate strategic coordination with global teams, including APAC, to support seamless handoffs and resource alignment.
  • Champion continuous improvement by standardizing lessons learned and embedding them into future project planning.

WHO YOU ARE:

Basic Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience managing hardware-based NPI projects, including team leadership across engineering disciplines.
  • Proven track record of launching complex electromechanical systems in fast-paced manufacturing environments.
  • Advanced skills in stakeholder management, resource negotiation, and cross-functional alignment.
  • Strong command of PLM (e.g., Arena), ERP (e.g., NetSuite), project tools (e.g., MS Project, ClickUp), and data visualization for reporting.
  • Experience mentoring other PMs and influencing project governance and process maturity across an organization.
  • Knowledge of software/firmware development coordination, GitHub, and MES tools is an asset.
  • PMP or equivalent certification strongly preferred.
  • Own the definition, planning, and execution of project scope, requirements, timelines, and budgets for complex, cross-functional initiatives.
  • Lead and align multidisciplinary teams—including mechanical, electrical, software, manufacturing, test, supply chain, and production—to ensure seamless project delivery.
  • Drive proactive risk management, quality assurance, and KPI tracking to achieve project objectives related to schedule, cost, and performance.
  • Apply sound project governance to control scope changes and maintain alignment with business and customer goals.
  • Act as a central point of accountability for communication, issue resolution, and stakeholder alignment across the full project lifecycle.
