Software Engineer Intern (Summer 2027)

ENFOS, Inc.

Durham, NC

Full-time

Posted 4 days ago

Job description

ENFOS is redefining how global enterprises manage long-term environmental risk. As the category leader in Environmental Obligation Management, our platform centralizes and automates the full lifecycle of Environmental Remediation Obligations (EROs) and Asset Retirement Obligations (AROs)-replacing fragmented spreadsheets and outdated tools with a purpose-built, multi-tenant SaaS platform.

For 25 years, ENFOS has helped the world's leading industrial companies stay audit-ready, SOX-compliant, and financially in control of their environmental obligations. Privately held and profitable, ENFOS operates with no direct competitors and supports a blue-chip customer base spanning energy and natural resources, chemicals, manufacturing, and logistics end markets.

With regulatory pressure rising and ESG scrutiny intensifying, ENFOS is uniquely positioned to empower Finance, Legal, and Remediation teams to improve decision-making, mitigate risk, and drive long-term balance sheet reliability.

About the Role

As a Software Engineering Intern at ENFOS, you will work alongside experienced engineers building and modernizing an enterprise SaaS platform used to manage complex environmental and financial obligations.

This is a hands-on engineering internship. You will contribute to real product development and may work across frontend applications, backend services, APIs, data processing, document management, AI-enabled capabilities, or platform infrastructure depending on your technical strengths and current product initiatives.

You will participate in the same engineering practices used by our development teams, including design discussions, implementation, code reviews, testing, and iterative delivery, and gain experience building reliable, secure, and scalable enterprise software.

We are looking for interns who have strong computer science fundamentals, enjoy solving difficult problems, and are comfortable learning beyond a single technology stack.

How We Work:
  • Agile development: Work in two-week sprints with clear goals, ownership, collaboration, and rapid iteration.
  • Engineering quality: Build production-quality software with an emphasis on clean architecture, automated testing, code reviews, security, performance, and long-term maintainability.
  • Modern technology stack: Gain hands-on experience across our technology stack, including Java, Spring Boot, React, TypeScript, PostgreSQL, Redis, RabbitMQ, WebSockets, GitLab, Docker, Ansible, and CI/CD, as well as modern AI-assisted development tools.
  • End-to-end engineering: Depending on the project, work across frontend, backend, APIs, data, AI-enabled capabilities, and platform services rather than being limited to a single area of the technology stack.
  • Engineer ownership: Take initiative, solve real problems, and contribute ideas that improve the performance, scalability, reliability, and user experience of the ENFOS platform.
  • Mentorship and growth: Work closely with experienced engineers, participate in technical design and code reviews, and develop the skills needed to build and understand enterprise-scale software systems.
Responsibilities

As a Software Engineering Intern at ENFOS, you will work alongside experienced engineers to design, build, test, and improve production software used by global enterprises to manage complex environmental and financial obligations. Depending on your skills, interests, and project needs, you may contribute across frontend, backend, data, AI-enabled features, or platform engineering.

You will have opportunities to:

  • Build production software: Design, develop, test, and enhance features across the ENFOS platform using modern software engineering practices.
  • Develop user-facing experiences: Build responsive, intuitive interfaces and reusable components using technologies such as React and TypeScript.
  • Build backend services and APIs: Develop application services, business logic, integrations, and REST APIs using technologies such as Java and Spring Boot.
  • Work with data and documents: Build capabilities for processing, validating, transforming, and presenting complex environmental, financial, and transactional data.
  • Contribute to AI-enabled capabilities: Work on projects involving document intelligence, natural-language interfaces, automation, forecasting, or other AI-assisted workflows where applicable.
  • Solve real engineering problems: Investigate requirements, evaluate technical approaches, troubleshoot issues, and implement maintainable solutions.
  • Integrate across the application stack: Connect frontend applications with backend services, APIs, databases, and other platform capabilities.
  • Improve performance and scalability: Identify opportunities to improve application responsiveness, reliability, maintainability, and scalability.
  • Write high-quality code: Follow engineering standards for architecture, testing, code reviews, security, documentation, and maintainability.
  • Collaborate across teams: Work with engineering, product, design, and implementation teams to translate business requirements into working software.
  • Use modern development tools: Gain hands-on experience with GitLab, CI/CD, Docker, automated testing, AI-assisted development tools, and enterprise development workflows.
  • Contribute to real enterprise systems: Work on production-quality software while receiving mentorship and technical guidance from experienced engineers.

Requirements

We are looking for students with strong software engineering fundamentals and the ability to learn new technologies quickly. You do not need experience with every technology listed below.

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field
  • Strong foundation in data structures, algorithms, object-oriented programming, and core computer science concepts
  • Proficiency in at least one modern programming language, such as Java, Python, JavaScript, or TypeScript
  • Experience building software through coursework, personal projects, internships, research, or other hands-on development
  • Understanding of fundamental software engineering concepts including modular design, debugging, testing, and maintainable code
  • Familiarity with Git and version-control workflows
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to break complex problems into manageable technical solutions
  • Ability and willingness to learn unfamiliar technologies, frameworks, and areas of the application stack
  • Strong attention to code quality, structure, readability, and maintainability
  • Ability to communicate clearly and collaborate effectively with engineers and cross-functional teams
  • Interest in using AI-assisted development tools effectively as part of the software development process

Experience in one or more of the following areas is a plus, but not required:

  • Frontend: React, TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, responsive UI development
  • Backend: Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, distributed application development
  • Data and AI: Python, machine learning, LLMs, document processing, embeddings, data engineering
  • Databases: SQL, PostgreSQL, relational data modeling
  • Platform and DevOps: Docker, Linux, CI/CD, cloud infrastructure, messaging or distributed systems
  • Software quality: Automated testing, performance optimization, secure coding, or accessibility

Benefits

  • Competitive internship compensation aligned with market rates
  • Flexible, rolling start and end dates set individually to fit your academic calendar
  • Potential to continue part-time during the school year for strong performers, subject to business need and work authorization
  • Opportunity to gain hands-on experience working with a high-performing engineering team
  • Exposure to real-world projects supporting enterprise-scale systems
  • Professional mentorship, learning, and career development throughout the internship
