What is a software engineer?

Software Engineers are professionals who design, develop, test, and maintain computer software and systems. They use programming languages, engineering principles, and problem-solving skills to build applications, websites, or software solutions that meet specific needs. Software Engineers may work in a variety of industries, such as technology, finance, healthcare, or entertainment, collaborating with other team members to deliver functional and reliable software. Their role often involves analyzing user requirements, writing code, debugging errors, and continually improving software performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with coding languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), version control systems like Git, and knowledge of software development methodologies are typically required. Excellent teamwork, communication, and adaptability distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure efficient, high-quality software development that meets user needs and adapts to technological changes.

What are some common challenges software engineers face when collaborating on large development teams?

Software engineers working on large teams often encounter challenges with communication, code integration, and maintaining consistent coding standards. Coordinating across multiple developers can lead to merge conflicts and misunderstandings about project requirements or priorities. Adopting tools like version control systems, regular code reviews, and clear documentation helps mitigate these issues. Building strong collaboration skills and proactively seeking clarification are key to ensuring smooth teamwork and project success.

What is the difference between Software Engineer vs Software Developer?

AspectSoftware EngineerSoftware Developer
CredentialsBachelor's degree in CS or related field, certificationsBachelor's degree often preferred, certifications optional
Work EnvironmentDesigning, developing, testing, and maintaining software systemsWriting, coding, and implementing software applications
Industry UsageUsed across tech, finance, healthcare, and more for system-level rolesCommonly used in app and web development projects
Search IntentUnderstanding roles, responsibilities, and qualificationsLearning about coding, programming, and project work

While both roles involve software creation, Software Engineers typically focus on designing and architecting complex systems, whereas Software Developers mainly concentrate on coding and building specific applications. The roles often overlap, but the Engineer role may require broader system knowledge and design skills.

Are software engineers still in demand?

Yes, software engineers are in high demand across many industries due to ongoing digital transformation, the growth of cloud computing, and the need for software development, maintenance, and cybersecurity skills. The profession offers strong job stability, competitive salaries, and opportunities to work with various programming languages and tools.

Is 25 too late to become a software engineer?

Age is not a barrier to becoming a software engineer; many professionals start careers in tech in their mid-20s or later. Success depends on acquiring relevant skills, such as programming languages and problem-solving, often through coding bootcamps, online courses, or formal education. Employers value skills and experience over age, making it possible to enter the field at 25 or older.

Job description

Job Description
Description
SAIC is seeking an experienced Software Engineer to support a mission-critical modernization program delivering a modular, adaptable software suite of essential capabilities across multiple warfighting functions. In this role, you will serve as a core technical contributor responsible for designing, developing, testing, and delivering high-performance software solutions that meet complex operational requirements across a modern, open-architecture platform spanning enterprise cloud and tactical edge environments.
This position operates across cloud and tactical edge environments, supporting software design, development, and validation across the full software development lifecycle - from initial architecture through fielding - in both garrison and deployed settings, including Denied, Degraded, Intermittent, and Low Bandwidth (DDIL) environments.
The work is to be performed at the customer site at Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG), MD.
This role is contingent upon award news in Fall 2026.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Design, develop, test, and deliver scalable, modular software solutions that address complex operational requirements across enterprise cloud and tactical edge environments within an open-architecture framework
  • Translate functional and non-functional requirements, user stories, and acceptance criteria into well-structured, maintainable code that meets performance, security, and interoperability standards across multiple security domains
  • Serve as a core technical contributor within agile development teams, collaborating with architects, integration SMEs, UX designers, and requirements analysts to ensure software solutions are accurately designed, developed, and verified throughout the program lifecycle
  • Evaluate and validate software capabilities including data onboarding and normalization, API performance, credential authority, data logging and alerting, and end-to-end system behavior across multiple security domains and network environments
  • Support development and validation of tactical edge software configurations, ensuring software solutions account for operations in DDIL environments including 72-hour autonomous operations and seamless data synchronization upon network restoration
  • Participate in product demonstrations, design reviews, and agile development cycles, providing rapid software iteration and technical assessment of solution compliance against documented requirements and operational needs
  • Collaborate with vendors, partners, systems analysts, and Government stakeholders to identify and resolve software defects, technical risks, and capability gaps throughout the program lifecycle

Qualifications
Required Clearance:
  • Active Secret clearance required.
  • TS/SCI Preferred
Required Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline
    • Or Master's Degree preferred in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field
Required Experience:
  • Eight (8+) years of progressive experience in software engineering, software development, or a closely related field, with a minimum of Three (3) years supporting defense, military, or interagency programs at the operational or acquisition level
  • Demonstrated experience designing and developing scalable, modular software solutions across multi-vendor, multi-domain environments, with proficiency in one or more programming languages such as Python, Java, C++, Go, or equivalent, and familiarity with microservices architecture and containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes
  • Experience working within agile development frameworks such as SAFe, Scrum, or Kanban, with working knowledge of DevSecOps pipelines, CI/CD toolchains, automated testing frameworks, and software configuration management tools
  • Familiarity with Zero Trust architecture, data security frameworks, secure coding standards, and the unique software development requirements of classified and multi-domain network environments
  • Experience developing software for cloud-based and tactical edge platforms, including the ability to design and validate software solutions that perform under DDIL conditions and constrained hardware environments
  • Background in API development, data integration, and open-architecture frameworks, with familiarity in military data standards, symbology, interoperability protocols, and operational workflow requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to software design working groups, brief senior military, civilian, and interagency audiences, and drive technical consensus across multi-vendor and multi-functional teams in fast-paced, dynamic environments

Target salary range: $160,001 - $200,000. The estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for this position based on experience and other factors.
