What is a software engineer trainee?

A Software Engineer Trainee is an entry-level position where individuals gain hands-on experience in software development. They typically work under the guidance of senior engineers, learning programming languages, software development methodologies, and debugging techniques. Their responsibilities may include coding, testing, and assisting in the design of applications. This role helps bridge the gap between academic knowledge and real-world software development practices. It is an opportunity to develop technical skills and gain industry exposure before advancing to a full-time software engineering role.

What kind of mentorship or training can I expect as a software engineer trainee?

As a Software Engineer Trainee, you can typically expect to receive structured onboarding, ongoing mentorship from experienced engineers, and participation in regular training sessions. • Develop and train machine learning and deep-learning models for MRI reconstruction, image enhancement, segmentation, and quantitative analysis.
  • Build software capable of extracting measurements such as fat, lean mass, and fluid measurements from MRI images.
  • Develop software infrastructure for automated tissue segmentation and compositional quantification.
  • Build and maintain reproducible ML pipelines, including version control, experiment tracking, testing, validation, and documentation.
  • Develop data-management workflows for pediatric imaging datasets while supporting appropriate data privacy and security requirements.
  • Optimize models and software for deployment within available research or point-of-care computing environments.
  • Validate AI/software performance against reference standards and established imaging methods.
  • Collaborate with MRI physicists, biomedical engineers, pediatric clinical investigators, researchers, and biostatisticians to ensure software meets scientific and clinical requirements.
  • Support technical documentation, validation materials, and information needed for research and regulatory/IRB review.
  • Provide technical updates, progress reports, presentations, and contributions to scientific manuscripts.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior staff or trainees involved in MRI-focused machine learning projects.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience developing machine-learning or deep-learning models for medical imaging or scientific applications.
  • Strong programming experience, particularly with Python and common machine-learning/deep-learning frameworks.
  • Experience with medical image processing, MRI reconstruction, image enhancement, segmentation, or quantitative imaging.
  • Experience developing reproducible scientific software using practices such as version control, testing, documentation, containerization, and experiment tracking.
  • Experience managing or processing large imaging datasets and developing automated data pipelines.
  • Understanding of model validation, performance evaluation, and optimization.
