Overview

About PowerSchoolAt PowerSchool, we power education for students around the world. As the global leader in cloud-based K-12 software, we support the full education ecosystem-from the central office to the classroom to the home. Joining PowerSchool means being part of a mission-driven team that is transforming K-12 education by helping schools operate more effectively and deliver better outcomes for educators, students, and families.

Team Overview

Our Research & Development (R&D) team is the technical talent at the heart of our product suite, overseeing the product development lifecycle from concept to delivery. From engineering to quality assurance to data science, the R&D team ensures our customers seamlessly use our products and can depend on their consistency.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will play a key role in building and improving scalable, reliable, and high-quality software solutions that support our products and platform. You will apply strong software engineering fundamentals across the full software development lifecycle, including design, development, testing, deployment, and ongoing optimization. In this role, you will work independently on complex features and systems, collaborate closely with cross-functional partners, and contribute to sound technical decisions within your team. You will also use generative AI, agentic AI, and other AI-enabled development tools to improve engineering efficiency, code quality, and delivery outcomes, while applying these tools responsibly and thoughtfully. This is a senior-level individual contributor role for an engineer who can solve a broad range of technical problems, contribute to system design, support engineering best practices, and mentor less experienced team members.

ResponsibilitiesDescription

The Software Engineering team is a group of full stack developers who design, develop, and maintain our products, tools, and infrastructure.

Your day-to-day job will consist of:

    • Design, build, test, deploy, and maintain software applications and services using modern programming languages such as TypeScript, Java, C#, Python, or other relevant technologies.
    • Own the delivery of complex features, services, or components with a high degree of independence, making sound technical decisions within established architectural patterns and team standards.
    • Collaborate with product managers, designers, and fellow engineers to translate business and user needs into technical solutions, balancing functionality, scalability, performance, and maintainability.
    • Contribute to system and solution design, offering input on architecture, technical tradeoffs, and implementation approaches for new features and enhancements.
    • Use AI-assisted development tools for coding, debugging, documentation, testing, and analysis to improve productivity, code consistency, and development quality.
    • Participate actively in code reviews, providing constructive feedback and ensuring adherence to coding standards, quality expectations, and secure development practices.
    • Troubleshoot and resolve software defects, performance issues, and reliability concerns in both new and existing systems.
    • Contribute across all phases of the software development lifecycle (SDLC), from requirements and design through implementation, testing, release, and support.
    • Support quality assurance efforts by creating and maintaining unit tests, integration tests, and other validation approaches, including AI-augmented testing techniques where appropriate.
    • Apply current software design principles, patterns, algorithms, and data structures to build maintainable and efficient solutions.
    • Partner with team members to improve development workflows, automation, observability, and engineering efficiency.
    • Explore emerging technologies, including AI and machine learning capabilities, and recommend practical applications that improve the product, platform, or development process.
    • Mentor junior engineers through technical guidance, code review feedback, and modeling strong engineering practices.
    • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement, responsible AI usage, collaboration, and technical excellence.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications
  • Minimum of 5+ years of relevant and related work experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or equivalent, or equivalent years of relevant work experience.
  • Travel occasionally, up to 5-10%, for key moments such as team summits, training, conferences, etc., with increased frequency during peak periods based on business demands.
  • This position is subject to company on call policies which constitutes working hours outside of the normal workday as needed.
  • Additional experience may be substitute for an advanced Degree.
  • Proficiency in at least one or more programming languages such as TypeScript, Java, C#, Python, or other relevant tech stacks.
  • Experience delivering production-grade software and independently owning significant features or technical components.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on problems of diverse scope, analyze technical issues, and apply sound judgment to identify effective solutions.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools (for example, coding, testing, debugging, documentation, or analysis) to improve productivity and software quality.
  • Ability to apply AI tools responsibly with consideration for security, privacy, reliability, maintainability, and appropriate human oversight.
  • Experience working within modern software development practices, including version control, CI/CD pipelines, code reviews, and Agile or Kanban methodologies.
  • Strong understanding of software design principles, design patterns, algorithms, and data structures.
  • Familiarity with SQL and database concepts; hands-on database experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with OWASP threats and mitigation techniques and secure coding practices.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment with limited day-to-day supervision.
