What does a Software Engineer do?

A Software Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, testing, and maintaining software applications or systems. They use programming languages and engineering principles to solve problems and build efficient, scalable software solutions. Software Engineers work on tasks such as writing code, debugging, collaborating with other team members, and ensuring software meets user and business requirements. Their role can vary depending on the company and project, ranging from building web or mobile applications to developing complex systems and infrastructure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (such as in Python, Java, or C++), a solid understanding of computer science fundamentals, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, development frameworks, cloud platforms, and possibly certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Developer) are commonly required. Problem-solving ability, effective communication, and adaptability are essential soft skills for collaborating with teams and addressing complex technical challenges. These skills ensure high-quality software development, smooth project execution, and the ability to innovate in rapidly evolving technology environments.

What are some common challenges software engineers face when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

Software engineers frequently work with product managers, designers, and quality assurance specialists, which can present challenges such as aligning on project priorities, communicating technical constraints, and coordinating timelines. Effective collaboration requires clear communication to ensure everyone understands requirements and limitations. Adopting agile methodologies and using collaboration tools like Jira or Slack can help streamline workflows and reduce misunderstandings. Being proactive in seeking feedback and clarifying expectations can significantly improve teamwork and project outcomes.

Through a unified and fluid organization, Publicis Groupe partners with its clients across communication, media, data and technology to ensure access to the full breadth of capabilities in every market. Present in over 100 countries, Publicis Groupe employs around 103,000 professionals.
Overview
Join a collaborative team at the forefront of GenAI innovation, where you'll transform innovative techniques into practical tools that boost productivity and improve daily life for users. Working closely with product leadership, you'll help shape requirements and goals, then see them through to execution with ownership and accountability. You'll also contribute thought leadership in GenAI and Data Engineering, applying your ability to understand and integrate diverse datasets while collaborating with domain experts to unlock new insights and deliver reliable solutions.
Responsibilities
  • Work with the Product Owner to turn vision and requirements into practical software designs that bring GenAI concepts into real-world applications.
  • Contribute to defining coding standards, guidelines, and reusable patterns that help the team deliver reliable and innovative solutions.
  • Build products that integrate services, APIs, databases, and data pipelines, ensuring scalable and resilient architectures.
  • Collaborate with teammates through code reviews, pair programming, and knowledge sharing, guiding best practices and learning from others.
  • Explore and evaluate emerging GenAI frameworks, tools, and data systems, recommending new approaches that can shape the product's direction.
  • Create technical specifications, system diagrams, and architecture proposals to share ideas and solutions with the broader team.
  • Partner with UX designers, domain experts, and data scientists to craft user-focused solutions that combine AI capabilities, data workflows, and intuitive interfaces.
  • Support DevOps processes by contributing to CI/CD pipelines, automated deployments, and the integration of AI models and services into production environments.

Qualifications
Qualifications
  • 3+ years of professional software engineering experience
  • Strong experience designing and building backend services, microservices, and cloud-hosted applications on platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Databricks.
  • Proficiency with Python and working knowledge of modern ML/AI libraries; hands-on experience integrating GenAI/LLM APIs (e.g., OpenAI, Claude, Gemini) into user-facing applications or service layers.
  • Familiarity with AI agent orchestration, vector databases (e.g., Pinecone, OpenSearch, MongoDB Atlas), and frameworks like LangChain, LangGraph or LlamaIndex.
  • Experience with relational and non-relational databases (PostgreSQL, MSSQL, MongoDB), as well as modern data platforms like Databricks or Snowflake.
  • Knowledge of data pipelines and workflows, including ingestion, transformation, cleaning, and preprocessing.
  • Working understanding of observability, monitoring, and performance tuning for production systems; experience building CI/CD pipelines and contributing to DevOps practices.
  • Knowledge of modern architectural styles (DDD, event-driven, ports and adapters, microservices) and standard processes for scalable, maintainable systems.
  • Strong foundation in writing clean, maintainable code with OOP principles, unit tests, and design patterns.
  • Understanding of data security, compliance, and governance practices.
  • Thrives in fast-paced, innovative environments and excels at balancing rapid prototyping with building scalable, production-ready solutions.

Bonus Qualifications
  • Experience deploying apps or models in Databricks and using MLOps tooling such as MLflow.
  • Experience building front ends with modern frameworks such as React or Vue connected to RESTful or GraphQL APIs.
  • Experience with other OOP languages such as C#, Java, C++, etc.
  • Familiarity with marketing tech or ad tech domains, including identity graphs, segmentation, and measurement.
