Job description

Senior Software Engineer - IE08CE
We're determined to make a difference and are proud to be an insurance company that goes well beyond coverages and policies. Working here means having every opportunity to achieve your goals - and to help others accomplish theirs, too. Join our team as we help shape the future.
The Hartford's Corporate IT organization is seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented Software Engineer to join Enterprise Risk Management IT (ERMIT) as part of the GIS team.
This role is focused on the design, development, and evolution of experience and integration APIs built on top of enterprise ArcGIS services that support critical underwriting, claims, and risk management capabilities across the firm. The ideal candidate brings strong software engineering fundamentals, with an AI first mindset and hands-on experience working with ArcGIS services, and a passion for building scalable, reliable, and well-designed APIs that enable business capabilities and downstream applications.
The role involves working across a modern technology stack including Java, Spring Boot, AWS, Python, Oracle, and React, with a strong emphasis on backend service development, platform integration, and collaboration with business partners. Successful candidates will demonstrate sound technical judgment, the ability to independently design and enhance service-oriented components, and strong collaboration skills when working with product owners, business stakeholders, and peer engineering teams, while adhering to established engineering standards, security practices, and delivery processes.
This role will have a Hybrid work schedule, with the expectation of working in an office (Hartford, CT) 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).
Responsibilities:
  • Maintain and enhance GIS platform components including experience APIs and supporting UIs
  • Design, develop, and optimize RESTful backend services using Java, Spring Boot, and AWS with an AI first software engineering mindset using GitHub copilot
  • Install, maintain, manage and support the ArcGIS Enterprise platform and products (Portal, Server, Data Store)
  • Configure and support Oracle as an ArcGIS Enterprise Geodatabase
  • Develop and maintain ArcGIS ST_Geometry functions in Oracle for spatial data management
  • Create and maintain spatial services using ArcGIS Pro projects and Python, including map, feature, and geoprocessing service publications
  • Develop Python and PowerShell scripts using ArcPy, ArcGIS Pro models, and Jupyter Notebooks to automate business processes, analytics, and data workflows
  • Support and enhance Python-based processes leveraging ArcGIS, ArcPy APIs, and GIS functions
  • Design, build, and maintain CI/CD pipelines aligned with Enterprise DevOps practices
  • Contribute to code reviews, automated testing, and debugging to ensure high-quality, maintainable solutions
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, including solution designs, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), best practices, and configuration guides to support long-term maintainability and platform stability

Qualifications:
  • 2+ years of experience in software engineering with a strong focus on backend development
  • Solid understanding of GIS concepts with hands-on experience using Esri ArcGIS technologies
  • Strong experience with relational databases hosting ArcGIS SDE Enterprise Geodatabases, specifically Oracle, including database procedural development and use of ArcGIS ST_Geometry functions
  • Strong OOP skills with experience in Java and Spring Boot
  • Strong appetite to utilize AI tools within a development environment
  • Demonstrated ability to design, develop, and maintain RESTful APIs
  • Experience working in AWS cloud environments, including infrastructure defined with Terraform, with a desire to continue developing cloud expertise
  • Proficiency in Python with working knowledge of Arcade and PowerShell
  • Experience using API gateway technologies such as Apigee or AWS API Gateway
  • Familiarity with CI/CD and DevOps practices and tools such as GitHub, Jenkins, and SonarQube
  • Proven ability to work effectively within Agile development teams
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interaction with both technical teams and business
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple changing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Bachelor's degree in Geography, GIS, Computer Science, or a related field, or comparable experience

Preferred Skills & Experience:
  • Experience with SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and/or Snowflake databases
  • Familiarity with natural peril risk modeling and evaluation techniques
  • Exposure to frontend SPA technologies such as Angular and/or React
  • Experience with FME (Feature Manipulation Engine) administration
  • Esri Technical Certification or GISP (Certified GIS Professional)
