What is a software engineer software developer?

Software engineers and software developers are professionals who design, create, test, and maintain computer software. While the terms are often used interchangeably, software engineers typically focus on applying engineering principles to the entire software development process, including system architecture and design. Software developers are more focused on writing code and building applications based on specific requirements. Both roles require strong problem-solving skills, knowledge of programming languages, and collaboration with other team members. Their work enables the technology and applications we use every day.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer software developer?

To thrive as a Software Engineer or Software Developer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and a solid understanding of computer science principles, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with languages like Python, Java, or C++, version control systems like Git, and experience with development frameworks and cloud platforms are commonly required. Excellent teamwork, communication skills, and adaptability help you collaborate effectively and respond to evolving project needs. These skills and qualities are crucial for building reliable, scalable software and successfully contributing to dynamic development teams.

How do software engineers typically collaborate with product managers and designers during the development process?

Software engineers frequently work closely with product managers and designers to ensure that technical solutions align with user needs and business goals. This collaboration often involves participating in regular meetings such as sprint planning, design reviews, and daily stand-ups to clarify requirements, discuss feasibility, and provide feedback. Engineers contribute technical insights early in the process, help identify potential challenges, and iterate on features based on cross-functional input. Effective communication and teamwork are essential for delivering high-quality software on schedule.

What is the difference between Software Engineer Software Developer vs Software Engineer Software Developer?

Job description

At ResMed, we're redefining how healthcare systems connect and exchange information. Our engineering teams build the secure, scalable integration platform that enables healthcare providers, payers, and partners to exchange clinical and operational data across the healthcare ecosystem.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you'll help design and build the services that power healthcare interoperability, supporting standards such as HL7 and modern API-based integrations while developing cloud-native solutions that enable reliable, secure, and scalable healthcare connectivity.

Overview

The Senior Software Engineer plays a key role in designing, developing, and evolving software solutions that support healthcare interoperability and enterprise integration. This role combines hands-on software development with technical leadership, contributing to the evolution of cloud-native integration services, messaging platforms, and API-driven solutions.

Senior Software Engineers work independently on complex technical challenges, provide guidance to peers, and help drive engineering best practices across the team. This role requires strong backend engineering experience, cloud development expertise, and a passion for building highly available systems that enable critical healthcare workflows.

Let's talk about responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain backend services using Java and Spring Boot.
  • Design and implement RESTful APIs that are secure, scalable, reliable, and performant.
  • Build and enhance cloud-native applications and services running on AWS.
  • Design and implement solutions using NoSQL databases such as MongoDB and DynamoDB.
  • Develop and maintain healthcare integration capabilities supporting standards such as HL7 and modern interoperability patterns.
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines that enable secure, automated software delivery.
  • Write and maintain unit, integration, and automated tests while promoting high engineering quality standards.
  • Troubleshoot complex production issues, perform root cause analysis, and improve system reliability and performance.
  • Apply secure software development practices, including secure coding, dependency management, authentication, authorization, and data protection.
  • Collaborate with architects, technical leads, product managers, and cross-functional teams to deliver scalable integration solutions.
  • Mentor engineers through code reviews, technical discussions, and knowledge sharing.
  • Leverage AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering productivity, code quality, and documentation.

Let's talk about qualifications and experience

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 6+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Strong proficiency with Java and Spring Boot.
  • Experience designing and developing RESTful APIs.
  • Experience working with NoSQL databases such as MongoDB or DynamoDB.
  • Experience developing cloud-native applications on AWS.
  • Strong experience using Git and GitHub for source control and collaboration.
  • Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines.
  • Strong understanding of Agile software development practices.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of secure software development principles and best practices.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred

  • Experience working with HL7, healthcare messaging, healthcare integration platforms, or healthcare interoperability standards.
  • Experience with AWS serverless technologies and event-driven architectures.
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform.
  • Experience with application security tooling and vulnerability management.
  • Experience developing or supporting .NET applications.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and technical leadership skills.
