Software Engineer Research Intern information

What does a software engineer research intern do?

A Software Engineer Research Intern typically works on innovative projects, collaborating with experienced engineers and researchers to develop new technologies or improve existing ones. Their responsibilities often include coding, running experiments, analyzing data, and contributing to research papers or technical documentation. They may also help design algorithms, explore new software frameworks, and present their findings to the team. This role is a great opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in both software development and research environments.

How does a software engineer research intern typically balance independent research tasks with collaborative team projects?

As a Software Engineer Research Intern, you'll often find yourself working on a mix of independent research assignments and collaborative projects with other engineers and researchers. It's common to tackle individual coding or data analysis tasks that support larger team objectives, while also participating in regular meetings, code reviews, and brainstorming sessions. Effective communication and time management are key, as you'll need to share your findings, seek feedback, and integrate your work into broader research efforts. Adapting to both autonomous and team-oriented work helps interns make a significant impact and learn from experienced colleagues.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer research intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Engineer Research Intern, you need strong programming skills, foundational knowledge in computer science, and a relevant academic background, such as progress toward a bachelor's or master's degree in a technical field. Familiarity with programming languages like Python, C++, or Java, as well as experience with research tools, version control systems (e.g., Git), and possibly frameworks for machine learning or data analysis, is often required. Critical thinking, curiosity, and effective communication help interns excel in collaborative research environments and adapt to rapidly changing project needs. These skills and qualities are crucial for contributing meaningful insights, producing reliable code, and supporting innovative research outcomes.

Job description

****Please note: This position is exclusively for the Fall 2026 internship term****

Our research team works on cutting-edge projects in the field of computer vision (CV) and artificial intelligence (AI) - helping machines perceive, understand, and reason about the world around them. We are looking for a passionate and talented intern to join our research team. The ideal candidate is highly motivated with broad knowledge in CV/AI, and with demonstrated ability for new technology research and a proven record of influential publications in related fields. The intern will have the opportunity to work with a diverse group of researchers in the exploration of advanced techniques and contribute to the projects.

This candidate is expected to:

Conduct original research in computer vision, including but not limited to spatial intelligence and reasoning (e.g. 3D/4D scene understanding, reconstruction, embodied perception, vision-language models, multimodal generative modeling, etc.), from conceptualization through implementation and evaluation.
Identify state-of-the-art (SOTA) techniques, performing systematic literature reviews and benchmarking existing methods to inspire new ideas.
Conduct experimental studies and refine solutions based on qualitative evaluation and quantitative metrics.
Write research papers and publish findings in top-tier CV/ML conferences and journals.

Requirements:

Deep understanding of computer vision and machine learning fundamentals; experience with 3D vision, geometric reasoning, or embodied AI is a plus
Strong programming skills in Python and hands-on experience with frameworks such as PyTorch, etc.
Proven experience in conducting original research in computer vision, with at least one publication in a peer-reviewed journal or conference
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to contribute to academic publications and present research findings
Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively within a team
PhD student in Computer Science, Computer Vision, Machine Learning, or a related field

Hourly interns pay range: $18 to $59, depending on degree-seeking academic program (PhD, Master's, Bachelor's, etc.), years of relevant experience, year in school, geographic location, credentials, qualifications, and other job-related factors.

Housing allowance and relocation benefit might be provided to intern candidates who meet the qualifications. Additional details on the compensation package will be provided to candidates during the interview process.
