What is a software engineer project manager?

A Software Engineer Project Manager is a professional who oversees software development projects from inception to completion. They combine technical expertise in software engineering with project management skills to coordinate teams, manage timelines, allocate resources, and ensure that project goals are met. This role often involves bridging the gap between technical teams and stakeholders, facilitating communication, and managing risks. They are responsible for delivering high-quality software products on time and within budget.

How does a software engineer project manager balance technical responsibilities with project management duties?

Leidos is a FORTUNE 500® company bringing a mix of innovative technology and sector expertise to customers in the national security, engineering, and health industries. We deliver innovative solutions through the efforts of our diverse and talented people who are dedicated to our customers' success. The Leidos Intel Sector combines technology-enabled services and mission software capabilities to support Intelligence Community customers as they address evolving national security challenges.
About the Opportunity
Leidos is seeking an experienced Software Engineer to develop, maintain, integrate, and enhance complex software systems supporting critical mission needs. You will work individually and as part of an engineering team to translate user requirements into software solutions, develop and modify software, integrate capabilities into operational environments, troubleshoot defects, and evaluate software performance. Depending on assignment, the role may also include significant Linux system support, Splunk, scripting, automation, data technologies, and supporting infrastructure.
Why This Role Matters
Mission software must perform reliably within complex technical and operational environments. As a Software Engineer, you will help turn requirements into working capabilities while solving software, data, integration, and performance problems throughout the development lifecycle. Your work will contribute to both the functionality of individual software components and their successful integration into larger mission systems.
What You'll Do
Software Design & Development
  • Analyze user requirements to derive software design and performance requirements.
  • Design and code new software or modify existing software to add capabilities.
  • Develop and implement algorithms to meet system performance and functional standards.
  • Debug existing software and correct defects.
  • Modify software to adapt to new hardware, correct errors, or improve performance.
  • Design, develop, and modify software systems using appropriate scientific analysis and mathematical models to evaluate design outcomes and consequences.

Integration, Data & System Performance
  • Integrate existing software into new or modified systems and operating environments.
  • Develop data queries for existing or proposed databases and data repositories.
  • Design or implement complex database and data-repository interfaces and queries.
  • Develop software solutions by analyzing system performance standards, system flows, data usage, work processes, and technical problem areas.
  • Work with users and systems engineers to understand requirements, performance expectations, and operating constraints.
  • Contribute to system-design decisions involving hardware/software tradeoffs, software reuse, COTS/GOTS alternatives, and allocation of requirements to software components.

Testing, Documentation & Engineering Practices
  • Review and test software components for adherence to design requirements and document test results.
  • Assist in developing and executing test procedures for software components.
  • Resolve software problem reports.
  • Write and review software and system documentation.
  • Apply software development and design methodologies appropriate to the development environment.
  • Recommend improvements to documentation and software-development process standards.
  • Serve as a team lead when appropriate to the software-development process and project environment.

Required Qualifications
Clearance
  • TS/SCI with Polygraph upon Application, to be considered for this position.

Education & Experience
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of experience as a Software Engineer supporting programs or contracts of similar scope, type, and complexity.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related discipline from an accredited college or university.
  • Four (4) additional years of Software Engineering experience on projects using similar software processes may be substituted for the bachelor's degree.
