Job description

Position Description & Qualifications
Serco is seeking experienced Software Engineers to join the AMSTC team in Newport, RI. In this role, you will contribute to the design, development, and testing of advanced unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) systems for critical military programs. This role supports both internal R&D efforts and external stakeholders, with a focus on software sustainment, system integration, and DevOps pipeline management. This position requires the ability to work in a controlled and compliance-driven environment while supporting mission-critical capabilities.
Serco supports the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC), including support for the design, acquisition, testing and sustainment of naval undersea warfare systems. You will be leading a team that works closely with the customer to deliver management, engineering, acquisition, and logistics support required to conduct system upgrades, maintenance, and sustainment in support of autonomous underwater vehicles. Serco has been supporting the Naval Sea Systems Command for over 50 years and has been recognized by the Navy for their outstanding contributions.
This position is contingent upon the ability to maintain/transfer a DoD Secret Security Clearance
In this role, you will:
  • Provide technical support to government and external user communities, including troubleshooting, issue resolution, and user engagement
  • Develop, maintain, and enhance core simulation software (PCX), including implementation of bug fixes and new capabilities
  • Conduct code audits and enforce software quality standards as part of the integration process with R&D development teams
  • Prepare, validate, and release software builds for external distribution in accordance with configuration management and security requirements
  • Perform lifecycle maintenance activities, including:
    • Operating system updates and patching
    • C++ compiler and library updates
    • DDS middleware configuration, updates, and troubleshooting
  • Design, implement, and maintain automated simulation and test pipelines, including nightly regression runs
  • Support simulation environments leveraging PCX, MOAA, and DSIM across diverse mission scenarios and vehicle configurations
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure system performance, reliability, and compliance
  • Maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines in secure, controlled environments

To be sucessful in this role, you will have:
  • The ability to maintain/transfer a DoD Secret Security Clearance
  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field
  • 2 years of relevant experience
  • Strong programming experience in:
    • C++
    • Python
  • Proficiency in Linux/Unix-based operating systems
  • Experience with:
    • Distributed systems (DDS or similar middleware preferred)
    • Version control (Git) and collaborative development workflows
    • CI/CD pipeline development and maintenance
  • Familiarity with DevOps tools and practices, including:
    • GitLab and GitLab Runners
    • Automated testing frameworks (e.g., Google Test)
    • Containerization technologies (e.g., Docker)
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex, integrated systems across software and infrastructure layers
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • The ability to travel up to 10%

Additional desired experience and skills:
  • Experience with modeling and simulation environments or autonomy systems
  • Familiarity with PCX, MOAA, and/or DSIM (or similar frameworks)
  • Experience supporting software in classified or regulated environments
  • Background in robotics, unmanned systems, or naval/defense applications
  • Experience with secure software development practices and accreditation processes
