What is a software engineer internship?

A Software Engineer Internships job is a temporary position where students or recent graduates gain hands-on experience in software development. Interns typically work on coding, debugging, testing, and collaborating with experienced engineers on real-world projects. These roles help build technical skills, industry experience, and professional networks. Many internships serve as a pathway to full-time software engineering positions.

What types of projects or assignments do software engineer interns typically work on?

Software Engineer Interns usually engage in real-world software development tasks such as writing and testing code, debugging applications, participating in code reviews, and contributing to team meetings. Interns often collaborate closely with experienced engineers, receiving guidance on best practices and exposure to the company’s development workflow. Depending on the organization, you might work on building new features, improving existing systems, or assisting with quality assurance. These assignments are designed to build your technical skills while making a meaningful impact on ongoing projects. The internship experience provides valuable insights into working within agile teams and helps you prepare for a full-time software engineering role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer intern?

To thrive as a Software Engineer Intern, you need foundational programming skills in languages such as Python, Java, or C++, and an understanding of computer science principles, often supported by progress in a related degree. Familiarity with code versioning tools like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and exposure to collaborative platforms such as Jira or GitHub are typical technical requirements. Strong problem-solving abilities, adaptability, eagerness to learn, and effective communication skills help interns excel in team-based environments. These attributes are crucial for quickly integrating into engineering teams, contributing to projects, and maximizing learning during the internship.

Job description

Jacksonville, United States | Posted on 07/07/2026

Key Responsibilities
  • Own full-stack product features across the complete SDLC: requirements analysis, design, development, testing, deployment, monitoring, and post-release support.
  • Develop, test, and maintain production-quality Python code for back-end services, APIs, and integrations.
  • Use AI-assisted coding tools and Generative AI workflows to accelerate development, prototyping, and debugging — what is commonly called "vibe coding".
  • Build prototypes and proofs-of-concept rapidly across both front-end and back-end layers to validate product hypotheses and external integrations.
  • Integrate with external APIs, SDKs, and Large Language Model platforms.
  • Write and maintain comprehensive test coverage: unit tests, integration tests, end-to-end tests, and contribute to test automation strategy.
  • Own deployment of features through CI/CD pipelines: build automation, environment promotion, release management, and post-deployment validation.
  • Monitor production systems, contribute to observability and alerting, diagnose and resolve incidents, and participate in post-mortems.
  • Participate in code reviews, technical design discussions, and architecture decisions across both back-end and front-end concerns.
  • Maintain clear technical documentation, API references, and developer-facing materials.
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, QA, and DevOps engineers across the full delivery cycle.
Required Qualifications
  • 0–3 years of professional full-stack development experience. Recent graduates with strong full-stack project portfolios are encouraged to apply.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Strong proficiency in Python, including familiarity with normal back-end frameworks (FastAPI, Flask, or Django) and libraries (Pandas, NumPy, requests, async/await patterns).
  • Working knowledge of HTML5, CSS3, responsive design, and modern front-end build tooling (Vite, Webpack, or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated ability to work across the complete SDLC: requirements, design, code, test, deploy, support.
  • Hands-on experience using AI-assisted coding tools to accelerate development workflows.
  • Proven experience writing automated tests: unit tests (pytest, Jest, or equivalent), integration tests, and component tests for front-end.
  • Experience with deployment workflows: CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or equivalent), build automation, and release management.
  • Working knowledge of REST APIs, JSON, HTTP, authentication patterns, and common integration approaches.
  • Solid foundation in Git, version control workflows, code reviews, and modern engineering tooling.
  • Strong analytical, debugging, and problem-solving skills across both back-end and front-end layers.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical decisions and trade-offs clearly.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Hands-on experience integrating with Large Language Model APIs from any major provider.
  • Experience with prompt engineering, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), agentic workflows, or LLM-powered application patterns.
  • Familiarity with Next.js, server-side rendering, or static-site generation.
  • Experience with end-to-end testing frameworks (Playwright, Cypress, or equivalent).
  • Familiarity with major cloud platforms, containerization (Docker), and Kubernetes.
  • Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform, CloudFormation), observability tools (Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, or equivalent), and production monitoring.
  • Familiarity with vector databases, embeddings, or AI/ML toolchains.
  • Contributions to open-source projects, technical blog posts, hackathon participation, or a public GitHub portfolio.
  • Internship or project experience in product engineering, developer tools, or enterprise SaaS platforms.
  • Exposure to design systems, accessibility (WCAG) standards, or component library development.
