What is a Software Engineer Internship job?

A Software Engineer Internship is a temporary position where students or entry-level professionals gain hands-on experience in software development. Interns typically work on real projects, write code, debug issues, and collaborate with engineering teams. The internship helps develop technical skills, knowledge of software development processes, and familiarity with industry tools. It also provides networking opportunities and can lead to full-time job offers.

What kinds of projects or tasks do Software Engineer Interns typically work on during their internship?

Software Engineer Interns are often assigned to real-world projects that may include developing new features, fixing bugs, writing automated tests, or improving documentation. They usually work as part of a development team under the mentorship of experienced engineers, which allows them to participate in code reviews, agile meetings, and collaborative problem-solving sessions. The exact responsibilities may vary, but interns are regularly exposed to the full software development lifecycle and are encouraged to ask questions and contribute ideas. This hands-on experience not only builds technical skills but also prepares interns for full-time roles after graduation.

Trane Technologiesis currently seeking a highly experienced Senior Software Engineer to design, build, and support scalable, secure, cloud-native applications that solve meaningful business problems. This role requires a strong full stack engineering background, deep experience in enterprise software development, and the ability to contribute in a senior-level capacity across architecture, development, deployment, and cross-functional delivery.

The ideal candidate brings proven experience delivering production-grade software in business or commercial environments, not just academic, internship, or personal project work. This person should be comfortable owning major technical components, contributing to architectural decisions, collaborating across Agile teams, and driving high-quality engineering outcomes from concept through production support.

This role is best suited for a software engineer with substantial real-world experience building modern web applications, working in cloud environments, applying DevOps and security best practices, and translating technical solutions into measurable business impact.

What you will do:

  • Design, develop, and deploy highly scalable and reliable cloud-based applications, integrating AI and machine learning to deliver innovative solutions for customers.

  • Build, maintain, and enhance primarily front-end applications in React, while contributing to back-end components in Python or Node.js as needed to support end-to-end web solutions.

  • Collaborate with product owners, data scientists, and UI/UX designers to create seamless, intuitive, and visually appealing interfaces.

  • Design and implement responsive, secure front-end solutions, with AWS supporting application hosting, integration, and scalability.

  • Develop and optimize data pipelines for big data and analytics, leveraging modern data stores such as columnar databases.

  • Apply best practices for application security, scalability, and performance in a cloud-centric environment.

  • Champion DevOps methodologies-including CI/CD, automated testing, monitoring, and infrastructure as code-to ensure rapid and reliable delivery.

  • Work closely with global teams in an Agile environment, mentoring peers and contributing to code reviews.

  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies, frameworks, and trends in AI, cloud, and full stack development.

What you will bring:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related STEM field.

  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience in enterprise or commercial environments, with a proven track record of designing, building, testing, deploying, and supporting production-grade applications.

  • Demonstrated experience in a Senior Software Engineer or equivalent role, including technical ownership of major features, systems, or platforms in a business environment.

  • Strong UI engineering skills, with demonstrated ability to deliver user-friendly, accessible, responsive, and maintainable web applications for business users or customers.

  • Proven full stack engineering expertise with React for front-end development and Python or Node.js for back-end development in production environments.

  • Extensive hands-on experience with AWS, Azure, or GCP in enterprise production environments, with a strong foundation in application and cloud security best practices, including managed services for scalability, reliability, observability, automation, secure coding, authentication and authorization.

  • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing cloud-native architectures for business-critical applications, including APIs, distributed systems, event-driven patterns, and service integrations.

  • Strong experience with DevOps and platform engineering practices, including CI/CD pipelines, Docker, Kubernetes, infrastructure as code, automated testing, and production monitoring.

  • Working knowledge of data-intensive applications, including analytics platforms, large-scale data processing, and columnar databases in production settings.

  • Experience collaborating effectively within cross-functional Agile teams, including close partnership with product managers, designers, architects, data teams, and other engineers.

  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear business and engineering discussions with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Ability to provide concrete examples of business impact, such as improving scalability, reliability, performance, customer experience, or operational efficiency through delivered solutions.

  • Experience leading technical design discussions, reviewing architecture decisions, mentoring engineers, and helping drive engineering best practices across a team.

  • Experience integrating, deploying, or supporting AI/ML capabilities in production applications is a plus, particularly where those capabilities delivered measurable business value.

  • Demonstrated passion for continuous learning, technical innovation, and adopting new technologies to solve real business problems.
