Job description

Description The purpose of this intern position is to work side-by-side with the staff of the engineering department to gain an understanding of multiple aspects that go into engineering projects including project management, design, construction methods and materials, traffic signals, and Right of Way. The intern will participate in project meetings, assist with public meetings, conduct plan review, assist with construction management, evaluating roadway conditions and signal maintenance activities. Examples of Duties The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class.

Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary. Assists the engineering department staff with managing capital improvements and/or engineering projects and other construction or renovation projects; helps in the preparation of bid packages/documents, construction contracts, specification and bid forms; assists in the preparation of work statements for design engineers and inspecting engineers. Will participate in preparing detailed summary reports with the Program Manager for revenue and expenditure accounts within each division; will see the coordination of the automobile, machine and equipment list and help ensure accuracy for inclusion in the budget.

Observes and participates in planning, directing and integrating comprehensive public works and utilities programs and activities with the Project Engineer. Attends virtual, in-person, small community, and large public meetings with the Transportation Planner to ensure stakeholder involvement throughout the comprehensive planning process. Assists the Project Manager in providing in-house reviews of drawings, material sources and specifications during construction; will help in preparing drawings of plans and details.

Performs duties with the Right-Of-Way Manager to prepare Deeds and/or Easement Documents; submits to property owners; and discusses terms and conditions. Will learn how to order appraisals, title examinations and surveys for Right-of-Way improvement projects. Performs related work as assigned.

Typical Qualifications Applicant must be currently enrolled in a college engineering program Supplemental Information All applicants tentatively selected for a position with Beaufort County Council will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for the illegal use of drugs and to a background check prior to appointment.
