Software Engineer Intern information

What does a software engineer intern do?

A Software Engineer Intern assists in designing, developing, and testing software applications under the guidance of experienced engineers. Interns typically work on coding tasks, bug fixes, documentation, and sometimes participate in team meetings or code reviews. The primary goal is to gain hands-on experience with real-world software development processes and tools while contributing to ongoing projects. This internship provides valuable exposure to industry practices and helps interns build technical and collaborative skills.

What does a software engineer intern do?

A software engineer intern works under the guidance of an experienced software engineer who is usually mid or senior level. As a software engineer intern, your responsibilities are to learn as much as you can about software engineering as well as learn how to navigate the politics and dynamics of a corporate or startup setting. Your job duties as a software engineer intern include tasks like coding and debugging software applications and experimenting with design elements. You also review other engineers’ code, test software applications and patches, and implement changes and updates when necessary.

What types of projects and tasks are software engineer interns typically assigned, and how do these contribute to their learning and development?

Software Engineer Interns are often assigned to real-world projects that align with the team's current goals, such as developing new features, fixing bugs, or writing automated tests. Interns usually work under the guidance of experienced engineers and participate in code reviews, stand-up meetings, and collaborative problem-solving sessions. These tasks help interns gain practical experience with industry-standard tools and workflows, while also building their technical and teamwork skills. As a result, interns can expect to leave the internship with concrete contributions to the product and a better understanding of software development processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, problem-solving skills, and typically be pursuing a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with coding languages like Python, Java, or C++, version control systems such as Git, and exposure to development environments are commonly expected. Strong communication, eagerness to learn, and teamwork set standout interns apart. These skills allow interns to effectively contribute to projects, adapt to new technologies, and collaborate within software development teams.

COMPANY OVERVIEW

Salt is a North American marketing agency that creates connected experiences through creative, digital & media innovation.

Our mission is to "Earn The World's Attention" and Salt is built to find, develop, execute, and amplify the ideas that are worthy of our clients' audiences. We've structured our agency to do what's right for our clients - to connect different perspectives, to work across mediums, and to focus on delivering meaningful, effective results.

We're committed to living up to the values in our name. "Salt of The Earth" means we value collaborative, humble, hard-working people here. We're looking for people who are as smart as they are kind because we believe the right talent and the right culture help us do what's right for our clients.

ROLE OVERVIEW

Join us as a Software Engineer building the next generation of AI products. This hands-on engineering role combines Platform Engineering, Security, and Software Development to create the cloud platform that powers our applications at scale. You'll spend approximately 50% of your time building secure, automated, and reliable infrastructure, and the other 50% developing innovative product features - working with the latest cloud, AI, and developer technologies to deliver solutions used across the organization. You will build, secure, and operate modern cloud-based applications and AI platforms, developing new product features while helping ensure our infrastructure is secure, scalable, and reliable.

Working closely with product and engineering, you will develop new product features while managing cloud infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, application security, and production operations across our AI platforms.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

Infrastructure & Data Platform Engineering

  • Maintain efficient cloud Infrastructure, and development environments.
  • Develop integrations with social media platforms, enterprise systems, and external APIs/MCPs.
  • Improve platform reliability, monitoring, logging, and performance.
  • Build and maintain data pipelines supporting AI products.
  • Ensure data quality, governance, and secure data handling.

DevOps & Security

  • Implement secure deployment practices and automated quality gates.
  • Perform vulnerability assessments, dependency management, and security testing.
  • Support penetration testing, remediation, and security hardening initiatives.
  • Ensure products follow secure coding standards and compliance requirements.

Software Engineering

  • Design, develop, and maintain full-stack web applications and APIs.
  • Build scalable backend services and modern frontend experiences.
  • Participate in architecture, code reviews, and technical design discussions.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

  • Secure applications with vulnerabilities identified and remediated early.
  • Reliable data pipelines powering AI products.
  • Highly available and scalable cloud infrastructure.
  • High-quality software delivered on schedule.
  • Strong collaboration across engineering, product, and security teams.
  • Well-documented systems that are easy to maintain and scale.

EXPERIENCE & SKILLS

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, or a related technical field.
  • 2-3 years of experience in software development, cloud infrastructure, or platform engineering.
  • Hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP), CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Cloud Build), Docker, and cloud infrastructure management.
  • Working knowledge of application security, including secure coding, IAM, OAuth/SSO, secrets management, vulnerability remediation, and security best practices.
  • Experience developing full-stack applications and APIs using modern technologies.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to manage production environments, monitor system health, and improve platform reliability.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across product, engineering, infrastructure, and security teams in an Agile environment.
  • Nice to haves:
    • Experience integrating APIs, building automation workflows (e.g., n8n), and working with AI/LLM platforms such as Gemini, Vertex AI, OpenAI, or Claude.
    • Familiarity with UX flows and writing specs/SOPs.
    • Exposure automation or agentic workflows.

PERKS & BENEFITS THAT SET US APART

We don't just talk about balance, growth, and culture, we build for it:

  • Work-Life Flexibility: Hybrid setup, up to 28 paid days off and winter holiday shutdowns
