Interns typically work on coding tasks, bug fixes, documentation, and sometimes participate in team meetings or code reviews. The primary goal is to gain hands-on experience with real-world software development processes and tools while contributing to ongoing projects. This internship provides valuable exposure to industry practices and helps interns build technical and collaborative skills.

What does a software engineer intern do?

A software engineer intern works under the guidance of an experienced software engineer who is usually mid or senior level. As a software engineer intern, your responsibilities are to learn as much as you can about software engineering as well as learn how to navigate the politics and dynamics of a corporate or startup setting. Your job duties as a software engineer intern include tasks like coding and debugging software applications and experimenting with design elements. You also review other engineers’ code, test software applications and patches, and implement changes and updates when necessary.

What types of projects and tasks are software engineer interns typically assigned, and how do these contribute to their learning and development?

Software Engineer Interns are often assigned to real-world projects that align with the team's current goals, such as developing new features, fixing bugs, or writing automated tests. Interns usually work under the guidance of experienced engineers and participate in code reviews, stand-up meetings, and collaborative problem-solving sessions. These tasks help interns gain practical experience with industry-standard tools and workflows, while also building their technical and teamwork skills. As a result, interns can expect to leave the internship with concrete contributions to the product and a better understanding of software development processes.

Electrical Intern (Fall 26)

Ottawa, ON • On-site

Internship

Re-posted 22 days ago

Job description

At Spaceium, we are building spacecraft systems designed to push the boundaries of what's possible in orbit. As an Electrical Intern, you will work alongside our electrical engineering team on real spacecraft hardware. This is a hands-on role where you will contribute directly to the design, testing, and integration of electrical and electronic systems for our missions.

Responsibilities
  • Support schematic capture and PCB layout for spacecraft avionics
  • Assist with harness design, wiring, and integration
  • Help bring up, test, and debug electronic boards and subsystems
  • Support electrical testing including power, signal integrity, and functional tests
  • Contribute to documentation, test reports, and design reviews
  • Assist with lab setup, instrumentation, and test equipment
  • Collaborate with mechanical, software, and systems engineers
Basic Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field
  • Familiarity with basic electronics, circuit analysis, and lab instrumentation
  • Exposure to at least one programming language (Python, C, or C++)
  • Eagerness to learn and work in a fast-paced startup environment
What We're Looking For

We're building technology that hasn't been done before. Experience is helpful, but curiosity, drive, and the ability to learn quickly matter more. If you're excited about spacecraft, enjoy solving hard engineering problems, and want to help build something new, we encourage you to apply.

Preferred Skills
  • Creative problem solver with strong first-principles thinking, capable of assessing risk and making decisions with limited data.
  • Experience in a nimble, technical engineering role, with a scrappy, entrepreneurial approach to meeting tight time or budget constraints.
  • Hands-on experience with personal or academic electronics projects
  • Familiarity with schematic capture and PCB layout tools (Altium, KiCad, or similar)
  • Experience with microcontrollers, sensors, or embedded systems
  • Comfort with oscilloscopes, multimeters, and lab test equipment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
Additional Requirements
  • Extended hours and weekend work may be required to support critical project and mission milestones.
  • This role requires a physical presence at the Ottawa facility.

Please submit any exciting project that you have worked on.
