Job description

Estimator

Our client is a well-established commercial general contractor with a reputation for delivering high-quality construction projects throughout New York State. The company specializes in commercial, municipal, educational, and government construction projects, including both ground-up construction and renovations. With approximately 25 employees and a collaborative, team-oriented environment, they offer the stability of an established contractor while maintaining the flexibility and entrepreneurial culture of a growing organization. Employees enjoy working in a laid-back, business casual atmosphere where accountability, teamwork, and professional growth are highly valued.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed cost estimates for commercial, municipal, state, and federal construction projects ranging from approximately $100,000 to $7 million.
  • Review project plans, specifications, engineering drawings, and bid documents to develop accurate labor, material, equipment, and subcontractor pricing.
  • Prepare and submit competitive bids for both design-build and plan-and-specification projects.
  • Develop detailed scopes of work for subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Solicit, evaluate, level, and compare subcontractor and vendor proposals to ensure complete scope coverage and competitive pricing.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and company leadership throughout the preconstruction process.
  • Identify constructability concerns and provide value engineering recommendations to improve project efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Manage multiple bids and deadlines simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Maintain historical cost databases, estimating tools, and pricing information.
  • Communicate with clients, subcontractors, vendors, and consultants to clarify project scope and pricing.
  • Support project turnover by providing complete estimate documentation, budgets, assumptions, and scope reviews to the project management team upon project award.
  • Ensure all estimates comply with applicable federal, state, and commercial bidding requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of estimating experience on commercial, government, or public construction projects.
  • Experience preparing estimates for both design-build and plan-and-specification projects.
  • Strong understanding of all major construction divisions, estimating methodologies, and cost development.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, construction plans, and specifications.
  • Experience developing scopes of work, labor and material takeoffs, subcontractor bid packages, and project budgets.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively coordinate with clients, subcontractors, vendors, and internal project teams.
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple estimates and deadlines.
  • Engineering background is highly preferred; however, equivalent hands-on construction experience will be considered.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office required; experience with Sage Timberline, Primavera, and Bluebeam is preferred but not required.
