Typically, they work under the supervision of senior engineers, assisting with coding, testing, and debugging software applications. This role is designed to provide hands-on experience, mentorship, and exposure to industry-standard tools and processes. Over time, individuals in this position gain the necessary knowledge and experience to advance to more independent engineering roles.

What kinds of projects can a software engineer in training expect to work on, and how are these projects structured for learning and development?

Job description

Software Engineer
Job Description
Bally's Intralot supplies integrated gaming and transaction processing systems, innovative game content, and value-added services to state-licensed gaming organizations. Drawing on extensive know-how, advanced product development standards, and substantial experience operating lottery games, the company delivers custom-built integrated solutions that combine operational efficiency with rigorous security and regulatory compliance.
Our games library includes more than 400 game types: numerical lotteries, TV lottery games, sports lotteries, fixed odds betting, instant lotteries, pari-mutuel, video lottery, and monitor games.
This role sits on the team building and operating our next-generation lottery platform - a cloud-native, containerized, microservices-based system with a React front end, Node.js services, and a MySQL data tier, deployed through automated CI/CD pipelines onto Kubernetes. Engineers on this team work across the full delivery lifecycle, from design and implementation through automated testing, deployment, and production support of a high-availability, real-time transaction platform.
Education, Training, and Experience
  • B.S. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • 2-3 years of experience as a Software Engineer, with demonstrated continual increase in responsibilities
  • At least 2 years of hands-on experience building web applications with JavaScript/TypeScript, including React on the front end and Node.js on the back end
  • At least 1 year of experience with a relational database, preferably MySQL
  • Practical experience with containerized applications (Docker) and with source control and CI/CD tooling (Git, automated build and deployment pipelines)
  • Exposure to microservices architectures and container orchestration (Kubernetes) is strongly preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Application Development
  • Knowledge of standard software engineering concepts, practices, and procedures, including code review, version control branching strategies, and automated testing
  • In-depth knowledge of JavaScript and TypeScript, with strong React experience (component design, state management, hooks, responsive UI)
  • Strong server-side development experience in Node.js, including RESTful API design, authentication and authorization, and integration with downstream services
  • Experience designing and consuming service-to-service interfaces (REST, JSON, and message-based/event-driven integration)
  • Familiarity with front-end build tooling, package management, and modern testing frameworks (for example Jest and end-to-end UI testing tools)
  • Working knowledge of additional languages such as Java, C, C++, Python, or shell scripting is an advantage

Data and Reporting
  • Very strong SQL skills, including schema design, indexing, query tuning, and stored procedures
  • Experience with MySQL administration fundamentals: migrations, backup/restore concepts, replication, and performance troubleshooting
  • Experience developing and deploying operational and business reports in a web environment; experience with JReports (or a comparable enterprise reporting platform such as Jasper, BIRT, or Crystal Reports) is preferred
  • Understanding of data warehousing, analytical/OLAP reporting, and data reconciliation concepts

Platform, Cloud, and DevOps
  • Hands-on experience containerizing applications with Docker and running workloads on Kubernetes; familiarity with Helm charts, config maps, secrets, and service discovery
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines for automated build, test, and deployment, and with promoting releases across environments
  • Understanding of microservices design concerns: service boundaries, versioning, resilience, idempotency, and backward compatibility
  • Familiarity with observability practices - structured logging, metrics, tracing, and alerting - and with using them to diagnose production issues
  • Working knowledge of Linux/UNIX environments; comfort on the command line
  • Awareness of secure development practices relevant to regulated gaming: secrets management, least-privilege access, secure handling of credentials, and audit logging

Domain and Professional Skills
  • Product software development experience, with a strong track record of delivering and supporting production systems
  • Experience coding for real-time, high-volume, event-driven transaction processing systems
  • Understanding of high-availability and disaster-recovery concepts in a mission-critical environment
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a team member in an Agile delivery model
  • Good oral and written communication skills, including the ability to document designs and explain technical topics to non-technical stakeholders

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain software applications, microservices, and specialized utility programs for the lottery platform
  • Build and maintain React front-end applications and Node.js services that meet functional, performance, and security requirements
  • Design and optimize MySQL schemas, queries, and data access layers supporting high-volume transaction processing
  • Develop and maintain operational and regulatory reports using the platform reporting toolset
  • Containerize services and maintain Kubernetes deployment manifests and configuration across environments
  • Create and maintain CI/CD pipeline definitions, automated tests, and quality gates to support frequent, low-risk releases
  • Analyze lottery and customer requirements and translate them into technical designs that optimize operational efficiency and efficacy
  • Participate in code reviews, design reviews, testing, analysis, and the certification of software for regulated jurisdictions
  • Support software installation, release deployment, and configuration in customer and internal environments
  • Troubleshoot and resolve defects and production incidents, including participation in an on-call or escalation rotation as required
  • Produce and maintain technical documentation for the systems and components owned by the team
  • Other duties as assigned
