What is a software engineer in test?

A Software Engineer In Test (SET) is a professional who specializes in developing and maintaining automated tests and testing frameworks to ensure software quality. Unlike traditional testers, SETs are skilled in programming and work closely with development teams to design testable software, automate repetitive testing tasks, and identify bugs early in the development cycle. Their main goal is to improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and coverage of software testing processes, often contributing to both code quality and faster release cycles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer in test?

To thrive as a Software Engineer in Test, you need a solid background in computer science, strong programming skills (often in Java, Python, or similar languages), and experience with automated testing frameworks. Familiarity with tools such as Selenium, JUnit, TestNG, and CI/CD systems, as well as knowledge of test management platforms, is typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and clear communication are critical soft skills that help you design effective test cases and collaborate with development teams. These skills ensure that software products are reliable, scalable, and meet quality standards before release.

What are some common challenges faced by software engineers in test when collaborating with development teams?

Software Engineers In Test (SETs) often face the challenge of ensuring their testing processes keep pace with rapid development cycles. Coordinating closely with developers is essential to identify potential issues early and to align on testing priorities. Communication gaps can sometimes lead to misunderstandings about requirements or missed edge cases, so proactive collaboration is key. Additionally, SETs may need to advocate for sufficient time for thorough test automation, balancing quality with project deadlines.

What is the difference between Software Engineer In Test vs QA Engineer?

We are seeking a Senior Software Development Engineer in Test with strong experience in both functional testing and test automation for commercial-grade data products leveraging Machine Learning and GenAI. This role requires a handsโ€‘on engineer who can validate complex data workflows endโ€‘toโ€‘end while also building scalable automation to improve coverage and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

Perform both manual (functional) testing and automation for data pipelines, APIs, and AI-driven workflows.

Understand business logic using SQL and scripting (e.g., Python) to design comprehensive test scenarios.

Design, develop, and execute functional test plans, test cases, and test scripts for ETL pipelines, ensuring data accuracy, integrity, and completeness.

Build and maintain automation frameworks for ETL, API, and workflow testing to improve coverage and efficiency.

Validate data transformations, mappings, and data loads across all stages of the ETL lifecycle.

Perform data validation and reconciliation between source systems, staging layers, and target data stores.

Conduct manual validation for critical workflows and edge cases where automation is not sufficient.

Identify, document, and track defects; collaborate closely with engineering teams to resolve issues.

Conduct root cause analysis for data discrepancies and contribute to quality metrics and reporting.

Participate in Agile ceremonies, providing QA input during sprint planning, grooming, and retrospectives.

Lead functional validation efforts and support test environment setup for data pipelines and workflows.

Work with crossโ€‘functional teams and external partners to validate integrations with healthcare data platforms.

Support production releases, hotfix validation, and postโ€‘deployment verification, ensuring minimal impact to customers.

Collaborate with Implementation/Onboarding teams to triage production data issues and improve test coverage.

Validate healthcareโ€‘specific data models for compliance with regulatory and business requirements.

Required Qualifications:

5+ years of experience in SDET or QA roles with a strong mix of functional testing and automation.

Strong understanding of ETL testing, data validation, and data quality assurance practices.

Proficiency in SQL for data validation, reconciliation, and test design.

Handsโ€‘on experience with Databricks, Apache Spark, or similar data platforms.

Experience with DAG/workflow orchestration tools such as Apache Airflow or Databricks Workflows.

Experience building and maintaining test automation frameworks (e.g., Playwright, Cypress, Selenium).

Experience with API testing tools such as Postman, RestAssured, or similar.

Strong knowledge of QA methodologies, test design techniques, and defect tracking processes.

Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments.

Experience testing systems that incorporate Machine Learning models, Speech-to-Text, or Text-to-Speech systems.

Strong analytical and problemโ€‘solving skills with attention to detail.

Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Experience creating test plans, test strategies, and quality processes for data/ETL releases.

Basic understanding of LLMs and AIโ€‘driven features, including how to test them effectively.

Nice to Have:

Experience in healthcare or regulated environments, especially with ETL workflows.

Knowledge of healthcare data standards such as HIPAA, HL7, or FHIR.

Strong experience with PostgreSQL and database testing for reporting and ETL validation.

Familiarity with cloud data platforms such as Snowflake, Redshift, or BigQuery.

Exposure to monitoring and logging tools like Splunk, Datadog, or similar.

Experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or Looker for validating reporting layers.

Experience using scripting (e.g., Python, Shell) for automation and data validation.

Familiarity with testing considerations for LLMs and GenAI systems.

Salary and Benefits:

We offer a competitive salary of $140โ€‘$160k and benefits, including a 401k that matches up to 4% of your salary, health, vision, and dental insurance, and very flexible paid time off.
